Although it has been marketed as The Woods, the upcoming horror film from Adam Wingard was just revealed to be something more than it initially seemed. Not only does it now have a new title, it will serve as a sequel to a groundbreaking 1999 horror film, The Blair Witch Project.

Seeing how it's not a secret anymore, we can all start talking about how Wingard's latest effort is now titled Blair Witch (formerly The Woods) and is indeed a sequel to the 1999 film. Audiences got a surprise screening tonight at San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC). It's pretty safe to say no one had a clue because it took comic-con participants by complete surprise.

Wingard previously spoke with Entertainment Weekly and had this to say:

“The Woods was our working title. When we signed on to it, we knew that [the name] was eventually going to be changed. To us, it wasn’t even going to be part of the marketing. But I think Lionsgate made a really smart decision, using that.”

What will Blair Witch be about?

Blair Witch ties into the original story as it is centered around the brother of the original character, Heather Donahue, as he enters the woods trying to unravel the mystery surrounding his sister's disappearance. If you don't remember, Heather disappeared after she went into the woods with two friends to make a video documentary about the Burkittsville, Maryland legend of the Blair Witch.

This unexpected horror sequel is set for a theatrical release on September 16, 2016 and you can check out the brand new trailer for the film below.
