When it comes to choosing the best TV show, each one of us has a personal favorite. If we, the viewers, were asked to rank every live-action television series based on DC and Marvel Comics, we'll probably end up getting a different permutation of ranks for every single viewer. But then, how can we rank all of these shows?

Well, the easiest way to do that is to rank them according to the ratings received by each of the shows on sites like Internet Movie Database (IMDb) or Rotten Tomatoes. However, there's bit of a problem with this method. Although it is the fans who vote on both of these sites, the ratings received on IMDb by a particular show can vary from those on Rotten Tomatoes. While some shows might have low rating on IMDb and high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, others might have a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite having a high rating on IMDb.

So, How Exactly Can We Solve This Problem?

Which one's the best DC Show, Stephen? Tell us.
Which one's the best DC Show, Stephen? Tell us.

We have to take into account all the fans who have voted on IMDb and the ones who have voted on Rotten Tomatoes. So, we have to combine the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb to take all of the fans into consideration. Now, some of you might be wondering that why I'm considering Rotten Tomatoes for fan rating. Rotten Tomatoes isn't all about the critics. The Tomatometer takes into account the critics' views. But apart from the Tomatometer, there's this other thing called Average Audience Score which takes into account the viewers' opinion. So, we are going to combine the IMDb rating with the Average Audience Score.

Why Not Consider Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Instead?

Over the years, Rotten Tomatoes has faced criticism for its method of calculating the rating for a movie or a TV show. Some genuinely good movies have received a bad rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Recently, the controversy regarding Suicide Squad's rating on the Tomatometer even led to fans signing petitions to shut down Rotten Tomatoes. So, we won't be considering the critics' rating a.k.a. the Tomatometer while calculating the combined score and just the Audience Score.

Method Of Calculating Combined Score

Movies and shows on IMDb are rated out of 10 and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes is rated as a percentage out of 100 percent. So, we have to take the IMDb rating of any particular show and convert it to a percentage score. For example, Arrow's IMDb rating is 7.9 and therefore its percentage score will be 79. Thereafter, the sum of both of the percentage scores is taken to get the combined score and the shows are then ranked accordingly. Note: The Average Audience Score from Rotten Tomatoes wasn't available for some of the shows and those shows are ranked on the basis of their IMDb rating.

Final Verdict

DC has rolled out a whole lot more shows than Marvel has over the years. But while DC has an upper hand in quantity, Marvel has an upper hand in quality. Daredevil is currently way beyond reach of any of the DC shows still on air, but the likes of The Flash, Preacher and iZombie could still go past Jessica Jones to secure the second spot if Jessica Jones fails to impress in its second season. However, seeing how the only two Netflix-Marvel shows have performed on this list and also taking into consideration that there are four more shows from the Netflix-Marvel collaboration (Luke Cage, The Defenders, Iron Fist and Punisher) over the next couple of years, DC shows could still fall a few places on the list.
