Three-time Woody Allen muse, BAFTA winner and twice crowned Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive, actress Scarlett Johansson is indisputably one of the hottest things to come out of Hollywood over the past two decades. And as we've observed her gradual transformation from wide-eyed child star to major Hollywood sex siren, we've only become more and more eager to sink our teeth into every project to which she aligns her name.
So, in celebration of all things ScarJo, who is apparently the highest-grossing actress ever by the way, here are some of her sexiest on-screen moments over the years. You're welcome.
1. Lost In Translation
What's so great about it? Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation is the film that essentially gave Scarlett Johansson her lion's share of attention — partly thanks to that particular pair of lovely, sheer pink underwear. One hell of a way to introduce a movie, I'm sure you'll agree.
Apparently, the opening took some convincing on Coppola's part. Speaking to The Guardian, the actress admitted:
"I really didn't want to do the sheer underwear. I told Sofia. I said, I'll wear underwear, if it isn't sheer. I had to wear underwear, like, the whole movie. It became very easy for me to trounce around in my underwear, in front of a large group of Japanese men. A skill I probably won't utilize again, admittedly. But sheer... sheer was... different."
2. A Love Song For Bobby Long
Role: Pursy Will
What's so great about it? There's just something incredibly sexy about Scarlett's young, head-strong character who ends up living with a dysfunctional pairing in her late mother's old house.
The feature allowed Scarlett's talent to shine through and when her character Pursy attempted to cover her breast in the 2004 feature in that moment, we can't say we weren't happy about it.
3. Match Point
Role: Nola Rice
What's so great about it? Scarlett Johansson engaging in adulterous, apartment-trashing sex with Jonathan Rhys Meyers? Yes please. As one of her most explicit roles, it not only cemented her sex symbol status in Hollywood but also took her level of performance to the next level. Director Woody Allen was similarly taken aback by her talent, uttering the following infamous words:
"It is very hard to be extra witty around a sexually overwhelming, beautiful young woman who is wittier than you are."
And as for whether Scarlett regarded the character of Nola her first femme fatale role, she has since said in an interview with MovieWeb:
"I don't know that I'm playing a femme fatale. I think that my character is confident and sexy, but I don't really think the character is a femme fatale. I don't think she goes into this relationship wanting to ruin Jonathan's life or his marriage. It becomes that way just purely out of desperation, and he's lying to her."
4. The Island
Role: Jordan Two Delta/ Sarah Jordan
What's so great about it? Michael Bay did well to cast Scarlett Johansson in The Island, as it definitely paved the way for making sci-fi sexy again. After all, in a world of surrogate parenthood and cruel organ harvesting, it helps to have a smokin' hot clone helping you escape.
Yet, when asked what she would do if she had a clone herself, Scarlett's answer wasn't as exciting as you might think. Speaking years ago in New York, she revealed:
"I'd just have [the clone] do simple household tasks, folding the laundry, maybe prance around in clothing so I could see what I might look like. You know, do the grocery shopping, change the toilet paper, things people just dont like to do."
5. The Black Dahlia
Role: Kay Lake
What's so great about it? As beautiful femme fatale Kaya Lake in De Palma's neo-noir crime thriller The Black Dahlia, Scarlett showed the world that she's definitely got what it takes to be more than the girl next door.
Luckily though, this time the actress had a little help getting into character. She's since admitted:
"Luckily I had what a lot of actors don't have which is the source the book. I mean, you read a script and you interpret the character's emotions through their actions and their words, but I had the perspective of Bucky's character looking in on Kay. So I really used that as the beginning source the character."
5. The Nanny Diaries
Role: Annie Braddock
What's so great about it? Clearly, the exposed panty look was a strong one for ScarJo from way back in Lost in Translation so she showed them off again in front of the future Captain America in The Nanny Diaries.
6. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
What's so great about it? Woody Allen's obsession with Scarlett continues in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, where he makes all our fantasies come true in one fell swoop by filming her getting it on with Penélope Cruz in a photographer's darkroom. Does it get any better than this? Probably not.
In interviews, Scarlett has spoken at length about the complicated romance between Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz's characters. However, she has always been surprised at the attention garnered by the same-sex love scene, once saying to DishMag:
"Every single interview that I've done in the past two days people have always asked me. 'Tell me about the kiss. What was that like? Did you just do one take and run off to your trailer?' I'm like, 'God. What? Is it like the Loch Ness monster that I'm kissing or something?' It's ridiculous and it's so conservative. The characters are in love with each other and that's what people who are in love with each other do. They're intimate. It's so not exploitive and so respectful and normal."
7. The Spirit
Role: Silken Floss
What's so great about it? We never thought we would say it, but Scar Jo is one hot Nazi in The Spirit.
Unsurprisingly though, donning a Nazi uniform was a strange experience for the actress. Chatting to Femail, she explained just how bizarre it was to put it on at first:
"I mean, all of our costumes are very tongue-in-cheek. It was [Samuel Jackson's] idea that the characters would probably give each other a memo of what their theme of the day would be and Frank got into the whole production design of this staff, with these big columns, and the posters of kind of Nazi memorabilia, and the Adolf Hitler. I think that Sam Jackson in an SS costume, it's just absurd. I mean, here you have, like, an African-American guy and a Jewish girl, in an SS costume. So for us, it was really part of just the fantasy."
8. He's Just Not That Into You
What's so great about it? She seduces the audience by going skinny dipping and then later has some pretty hot office foreplay with Bradley Cooper before bouncing on out of there. Amongst many things, this movie essentially confirmed just how much we were really into Scarlett Johansson.
Yet, despite the fact that her character's relationship with Bradley Cooper's goes awry, the actress has remained non-judgmental of Anna, revealing in an interview:
"I think even though there was somebody that was being hurt in the process, I think that the two characters really like each other. They connect, and so you can't really hate them because it's not like they are being vindictive. She's not looking to steal married men. He's not looking to have an affair."
9. Marvel Cinematic Universe
Year: 2010 - present
Role: Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow
What's so great about it? For her role as Black Widow, Scarlett swapped her blonde tresses for red locks and equipped her fit bod with a skin-tight leather suit. Thus, she became the sexiest superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, snapping men's necks and breaking hearts along the way.
In an interview, Scarlett said the following about connecting with her character:
"I think that the character is sort of a shape-shifter. It was sort of like playing two different characters. One character that is more kind of mysterious, I don’t want to say submissive, but she’s blending in with the crowd, I suppose. The other part of this character is someone who is assertive and knows their sh-t."
Bring on that Black Widow solo movie!
10. Don Jon
Role: Barbara Sugarman
What's so great about it? Scarlett Johansson proves that a Jersey accent and bit of chewing gum-smacking can be irresistible in Don Jon. In fact, she's so sexy that she's enough to make her boyfriend give up porn. For a time, anyway.
In the movie, Barbara Sugarman is referred to as a "dime," a perfect 10. As to whether playing such an objectified woman bothered her, Johansson had this to say during a phone call interview with AZC:
"She wasn’t just, as you say, a dime. She wasn’t just an annoying girlfriend who hates porn. She’s a stereotype, but this film, I think, she’s sort of humanized in this film. I have the opportunity to really flesh her out. We talked about why she is the way she is. She has to be a sympathetic character. She isn’t supposed to be the villain. She has to be someone the audience can relate to in some ways."
11. Under The Skin
Role: The Female
What's so great about it? If you're into bizarre fetish sex and seeing other-worldly seductress Scarlett devour men in her black vortex alien chamber, this is the film for you.
The character was unlike anything that the actress had worked with in the past. However, that is where the ultimate challenge lay. With The Guardian, Scarlett has spoken openly about why she was enticed by this alien role, saying:
"I thought it would be incredibly challenging to play a character that's free of judgment, that has no relationship to any emotion I could relate to."
What's so great about it? OK, granted Scarlett Johansson doesn't actually physically appear in this movie, but her sexy voice certainly makes an impression. Quite frankly, if we ever had a computer operating system with a husky tone like hers, we would also have no option but to fall in love.
However, although she's proud for bringing Samantha to life, it's far from her own technological reality. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Scarlett recently admitted:
"Samantha makes him realize that he can like love again. I can’t imagine that I’ve ever had that relationship with my Blackberry. I guess the only thing that has changed my life, or had a positive effect on my life, is Skype or Facetime."
What do you think is Scarlett Johansson's sexiest moment?
