Suicide Squad is just a little over a week away and I'm sure we are all feeling the excitement after the WB/DC presentation at San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC). Not only did we get a new trailer, but we got to see the cast interact with each other and their fans. We also have seen a bit of a rush of new footage for the film in the past week or so, which has definitely raised some eyebrows, especially regarding the type of relationship Harley Quinn and the Joker might have.

Harley Quinn and the Joker are perhaps the most popular couple within the comic book universe and easily one of the most violent, abusive relationships ever portrayed. The portrayal of this couple, played by Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, has already resonated with audiences and it could be said that they're the biggest draw of Suicide Squad. However, there have been a lot of iterations of this relationship in comic books, video games, and animated series and it's leaving us with a big question: What arcs will be followed in Suicide Squad?

With this article, we will talk about some interesting possibilities regarding what we might see between Harley Quinn and the Joker based on what we've seen before. These possible storylines in question are being discussed because they are hinted at and referenced in both in the trailers and clips that we've seen so far. I will also warn that this article does feature clips, photos, and information from the trailers and footage we've received so far, so exercise some caution if you've been intentionally ignoring the trailers, clips, and B-roll footage to avoid spoilers.

Why Does The Joker Have Baby Clothes?

I noticed a lot of things after watching the "Joker sneak peek" trailer that debuted last week, and one of the bits that stuck in my mind was the addition of baby clothes in his "loot circle." While some might just shrug it off, there is actually one possible explanation for this weird addition. So, why exactly would the Joker have baby clothes?

Well, one possibility exists in a clip from Injustice: Gods Among Us when Harley Quinn has a rather deep conversation with Black Canary. A conversation where she talks about the daughter she had and hid from the Joker. While Harley claims that she wasn't aware of her pregnancy with her daughter, the likely truth is that she knew the Joker simply couldn't have cared less and would have made a terrible father.

As much of a bombshell this might be for Suicide Squad, it doesn't change that this iteration of their story contradicted the longstanding theory from fans that Harley Quinn and the Joker never had a sexual relationship — a theory that stemmed from the fact that he always seemed disgusted by her sexual advances towards him. Judging from the Suicide Squad trailers so far, Harley's club dancing and his apparent desperation to reunite with her would suggest otherwise. I wouldn't say this storyline is an exact reason why the baby clothes are in his possession, but it might just be a hint that bigger things are planned for the future. Either that or it's just fan service and they tossed it in as nothing more than an Easter Egg.

Are Both Harley Quinn And The Joker In Love?

It's no secret to anyone familiar with this couple that Harley Quinn has always taken her Puddin's abuse with a grain of salt. Whether it's blaming herself, excusing her behavior, or just shrugging it off, Harley always seems to find an excuse to justify going back for more. But while she has a burning desire and obsession towards him, he always seems to be a bit indifferent towards her. Not to mention the fact that he is extremely physically and emotionally abusive towards his former psychiatrist.

Now this is where Suicide Squad gets a bit confusing. Judging from what we've seen so far, Harley's obsession with him is on point, but it also appears that his obsession with her is just as strong and that he will stop at nothing to reunite with his love. Even when Entertainment Weekly released their Suicide Squad issue, they revealed this to be the Joker's motivation in the film:

Throwing a wrench into all these plans is the tatted Gotham City arch-criminal, the Joker (Jared Leto), and his laser-like plan to reunite with his true love, Harley (Margot Robbie), mission be damned.

While the trailers also do hint at his abusive tendencies, the Joker's specific sneak peek trailer and the EW synopsis definitely suggest that he might not be so indifferent towards Harley (at least not as much as we've been led to believe he is over the past 23 years). Perhaps he'd be obsessed enough to get jealous over a possible relationship between Harley and Deadshot, too.

Also in the Joker's possession is Harley's classic jester suit, so the evidence is solid regarding a possibility that Suicide Squad will portray the Joker as having as much of an obsession as Harley does. It would definitely be a different take on the couple's story, but I don't know if it would necessarily be a bad one either.

Final Thoughts?

I think we are going to get a treat regarding Harley Quinn and the Joker no matter how things play out, but I think these possibilities are the strongest we have so far. If you've been watching the clips and interviews that came out of SDCC, you might have seen the clip between the two when they come face-to-face with Batman. I must say, they look awfully cozy together and the Joker seems to be quite into his girl.

One thing I do hope they don't tread lightly around is the level of abuse he displays towards Harley Quinn. Not only is it important for her character development, but it is the nature of their relationship. There never have been any real ride into the sunset fairytale endings for Harley Quinn and the Joker, so in a way it would be a shame to taint that by making them too into each other. Either way, we will find out when Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
