The grand reveal that 2016 horror The Woods is actually a thinly-veiled sequel to The Blair Witch Project has revitalized interest in the Blair Witch legend. Hmmm, it's almost as if that's what the marketing team wanted to happen... Personally, I'm all for reliving a bit of late '90s horror magic, and the Blair Witch Project pushes my nostalgia buttons like no-one's business. You may remember the marvelously creepy theme, 'The Cellar' by Tony Cora.

Those poor fresh-faced kids wandering into Black Hills Forest to be terrorized, snotty-nosed and helpless in the darkness. At least they had Josh's Blair Witch Mix to accompany their journey, although Josh himself ended his story arc abruptly as a pile of teeth wrapped in a shirt. So what tunes was he packing for his romp in a haunted woods? Well, it seems Josh quite liked his post-punk and industrial rock vibes. Although its also interesting to note the inclusion of "Gloomy Sunday", a.k.a 'The Hungarian Suicide Song'. Check out the full playlist below:

  • "Gloomy Sunday" – Lydia Lunch
  • "The Order of Death" – Public Image Ltd.
  • "Draining Faces" – Skinny Puppy
  • "Kingdom's Coming" – Bauhaus
  • "Don't Go to Sleep Without Me" – The Creatures
  • "God Is God" – Laibach
  • "Beware" – The Afghan Whigs
  • "Laughing Pain" – Front Line Assembly
  • "Haunted" – Type O Negative
  • "She's Unreal" – Meat Beat Manifesto
  • "Movement of Fear" – Tones on Tail
  • "The Cellar" – Antonio Cora

You can purchase the soundtrack through the usual avenues or have a listen below in the Spotify playlist and relive your gothy teen feelings (or whatever else you were doing in 1999). The only song missing is The Creatures' 'Don't Go To Sleep Without Me,' which is not available on Spotify, but can be found on Youtube. Also not included: the songs Josh sings to himself during the movie:

  • America The Beautiful
  • The Star Spangled Banner
  • Gilligan's Island Theme

What's your favorite horror movie song?
