Finally, we've been given clues as to the American Horror Story 6 theme. FX kindly dropped several Season 6 teasers, which offer an array of visual and aural hints for what we can expect from American Horror Story 6. Some decent theories for the Season 6 theme have been dashed, some are still in the running — check out American Horror Story 6 theme ideas here and here — but take a look at a breakdown of the Season 6 teasers for more insight into the AHS 6 theme!

1. The Creature

The most recent AHS teaser is the one dropped via the AHS Facebook page, which simply screams 'Creature From the Black Lagoon'! The gorgeous Fay Wray-esque styling really seems to scream classic Hollywood... and if you check out the other trailers, you'll see that they're all similarly theatrical and easily linked to other moments in horror movie history. What if — and bear with the fan theory now —

The rockabilly horror Misfits-style font suggests a spot of campy throwback, and the Creature From the Black Lagoon similarity is just too perfect to ignore... We've been told that American Horror Story season 6 is set across two time periods, so could it be possible that we're going to jump between classic and modern Hollywood?

2. Baby Love

There are no shortage of horror movies featuring freaky pregnancies, and the topic of evil and/or freaky children is well known to American Horror Story. From Vivien's devil spawn to The Countess's Bartholomew, kids in AHS are always a force to be reckoned with, and American Horror Story 6 will add to that glorious kindergarten from hell. Murphy has previously commented that AHS:

“Often deals with the innocence of children, and their wide-eyed way into it. Both ideas we’re working with have elements of children.”
  • Sound: A woman humming a lullaby-style song and a baby crying.
  • Visual horror parallel: Rosemary's Baby is the most obvious horror infant, but the grasping hand conjures imagery from as far back as The Creature From the Black Lagoon.
  • Theme Idea: American Horror Story: Antichrist. More on this idea here.

3. AHS Bought The Farm...

The American Horror Story '6' curls in black smoke in a menacing sky hung heavy with clouds. Ears of corn sway in the quickening wind... Pathetic fallacy, eat your heart out! I was reminded of the atmosphere of Gillian Flynn's Dark Places, a horror/thriller novel that kicks off with the slaughter of an entire family in a rural farmhouse...

  • Sound: Storm's a-brewin' out in them there hills. What was that? Yes. Yes, that was a chainsaw!
  • Visual horror parallel: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  • Theme Idea: American Horror Story: Farmhouse. I'd like to see what Ryan Murphy could do with the Texas Chainsaw / Hills Have Eyes / Children of the Corn-style horror.

4. They're Coming To Get You, Barbara!

Zombies? Aliens? Who — or what — are those figures stumbling from the mist, their eyes glowing in their sockets? The color palette and the dusty-looking atmosphere suggest a desert / dustbowl climate.

Sound: Operatic music in the background with a low mumble of radio chatter and static. This seems to be a very literal nod to Ryan Murphy's comment on Season 6:

“I think the show has always felt to me like an opera, so I think both of the things we’re writing right now will have a certain feel.''

5. Buggin'

Ew. I can happily sit through hours of gory horror action, but the idea of a relatively harmless bug on my face is much, much worse. A gross millipede creature crawling over a feminine person (who looks very much like Lady Gaga) keeps the teasers nice 'n' nasty.

  • Sound: A child (or person who sounds very young) humming and we hear the invertebrate slithering.
  • Visual horror parallel: The Human Centipede II
  • Theme Idea: American Horror Story: Darkweb. This kind of creepy fetishism could fit well into a series exploring the darker side of human nature through hardcore, perversion and sex work.

6. A Horror Staple

OK, so this is definitely the most graphic and vile of the teasers, and certainly befitting of Murphy's promise that American Horror Story 6 will be ''not opulent, more rogue and more dark'' than recent seasons. The hapless staple victim looks very like the creature that emerged from the beds in the Hotel Cortez.

  • Sound: The noise of industrial staples being driven into a human scalp, followed by a brisk, British voice saying, ''Try to keep it dry.''
  • Visual horror parallel: The Hoarder
  • Theme Idea: Any period since the dawn of staples would fit, but this gleefully malicious form of torture would fit particularly well in a campier setting such as American Horror Story: Camp or Cruise.

7. Getting Handsy

How many horror movies love a good, dank basement? Just off the top of my head there's Intruders, The Innkeepers, The People Under The Stairs, Evil Dead, The Blair Witch Project...

  • Sound: A female voice whimpering
  • Visual horror parallel: The hands shooting out are reminiscent of Roman Polanski's Repulsion
  • Theme Idea: American Horror Story: Boarding School. Every school has a freaky basement area, right? Just ask the residents of Elm Street...
