It's been 15 years since Anne Hathaway first dazzled us as the adorable, frizzy-haired Princess of Genovia, Mia Thermopolis, in the late Garry Marshall's The Princess Diaries. While I fully admit that the live-action Disney movie is far from a cinematic masterpiece, it's one that I can't help but enjoy.

To honor the milestone anniversary and in preparation for Princess Diaries 3 potentially on the way, it's time we relive the magic and reacquaint ourselves with one of Disney's most relatable princesses.

Here are 15 valuable life lessons we all learned from Mia Thermopolis and The Princess Diaries:

1. Love Yourself — Bushy Brows and All

Brow. Game. Strong.
Brow. Game. Strong.

Ultimately Mia goes through one of my all-time favorite movie makeovers, but she had hit a point of acceptance with her body even before her contact lenses and plucked brows. No easy task for a teen. And these days, anyone would kill for her strong brows.

2. Luscious Locks Come At A Price

Mia learned the hard way that not all Disney princesses are genetically gifted with mermaid hair. And the price for Mia's new 'do? A few broken brushes and a keratin treatment.

3. You Can Learn A Lot From Your Elders

Julie Andrews knows best, after all.

Some of these lessons may have been more princess-specific, but it's always wise to listen to Julie Andrews.

4. Occasionally You Need To Vent

How have I never recreated this scene with my mom?

Especially if that venting includes popping paint-filled balloons with your cool mom.

5. Be Honest About How You Feel

Shut up, indeed.
Shut up, indeed.

In general, "shut up" might not be the most appropriate response to your grandmother. But after learning you've been a secret princess your whole life it seems pretty fitting.

6. Nutrition Is Crucial

Not the soy nuts!

Always carry a healthy and nutritious snack. You know, just in case.

7. Don't Let The Haters Get You Down

Mia's transformation from meek teenager to bold princess reached its peak after she hit Josh Bryant straight in the stomach. After what he did to her at the beach party, this scene was particularly satisfying.

8. Dairy Products Make For Great Revenge

Take that, Mandy Moore!
Take that, Mandy Moore!

While I don't condone — or should I say cone-done? — wasting ice cream, I think using it to stand up to a long-time bully is an acceptable case.

9. Sometimes Being Firm With Your Best Friend Will Help Your Relationship Grow

Oh, and I've been acting weird because I'm secretly a princess.
Oh, and I've been acting weird because I'm secretly a princess.

I always found it admirable when Mia was able to stand up to Lily for giving her a hard time. Lily felt left out and confused by Mia's new behavior, and it wasn't until Mia put her foot down that she felt she could be totally open and honest about her royal identity.

10. Always Check the Temperature Of Your Foods Before Eating

This might seem like a no-brainer, but I — probably more than most people — can understand the overwhelming excitement that hits when presented with food.

11. Pets Are Our Most Trusted Confidants

If Genovia was a democracy Fat Louie would be president.

Fat Louie is not-so-secretly the star of The Princess Diaries.

12. Don't Be Afraid To Make Light Of A Situation

Thumbs up for these strange, awkward princess lessons!

13. And Don't Be Afraid To Laugh At Yourself

Fun fact: Anne Hathaway's fall in this scene was actually real! Being the star that she is, she was able to laugh it off. Director Garry Marshall loved it so much he decided to leave it in the movie.

14. Always Be Thankful For The People Who Love You, Even When You Feel Invisible

Swoon forever.
Swoon forever.

In the Michael versus Nicholas debate, I'm team Michael all the way. He liked her even before the makeover, after all! Plus it's a serious feat to look that good in what was basically Eddie Munster hair.

15. Never Stop Doin' Your Thang!

Mia Thermopolis is all of us.
Mia Thermopolis is all of us.

in the end, I think the main lesson to take away from The Princess Diaries is to be true to yourself. Whether you're the Princess of Genovia or a geeky teen from San Francisco, you are not defined by your labels. Just do what makes you happy and everything else will come easily.
