Since news broke that Avengers: Infinity War was no longer going to be shot in two parts, Marvel kept fans wondering: "Now what?"
According to IGN.com, Joe Russo said that the next Avengers instalments were two very different movies and therefore should not be considered as two separate parts to the same story. Josh Brolin, who plays Thanos, said Avengers: Infinity War essentially boils down to Thanos versus everyone else and that he was "blown away" by the story that will be hitting screens in 2018.
Apparently, the title Avengers: Infinity War still stands for the 2018 movie, but as far as the follow up is concerned, the title has been shifted to Untitled Avengers Movie, causing online sites everywhere to breathe a sigh of relief that no long titles would be in Marvel's future, at least as far as the Avengers properties were concerned.
But where does that leave the future Avengers flicks?
At the end of Age of Ultron, the team was effectively disbanded, with Cap and Black Widow training the New Avengers while Hulk went missing and Iron Man and Thor returned to New York and Asgaard respectively. Thanos is hungry for power, infinity stones and whatever else he can lay his purple hands on.
One of two things could happen in the third and fourth Avengers movies; Loki, who is quite probably Thanos' inside man (god?), will continue his power mad pursuit of the rule of the galaxy, and will ultimately be brought to justice by whatever mix of heroes that will ultimately form the MCU's Avengers, and then the fourth movie will follow the Avengers bringing Thanos to justice, or everything that was supposed to be broken into Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 and 2 will be crammed into one movie with the now-Untitled Avengers Movie a bit of a mystery.
We know that it's unlikely the new movies due out from Marvel before the Untitled Avengers Movie - Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - will have anything to do with the storyline for the fourth Avengers movie, but it's equally unlikely that the fourth Avengers movie will just feature an easy ride for our favorite heroes.
There are possibilities that the new Avengers flick will feature the New Avengers that Cap and Black Widow were about to start training at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, though the involvement as far as the original Avengers team is concerned is something of a gray area. Certainly, Cap and Falcon bonded heavily throughout Captain America: Winter Soldier, so a Falcon-heavy storyline might be the way the directors decide to go.
However, Cap has been through a lot, between a best friend who was brainwashed into becoming a deadly assassin, losing his lady love in Agent Carter, and effectively going through a civil war of sorts, so while a Falcon-heavy storyline might not be unheard of, putting Captain America through more trauma by putting another friend in danger might just be too much.
What is more likely is that the writers for Untitled Avengers Movie will lean heavily towards drawing from the six-part Infinity War series, though the bulk of that 6-part series will no doubt be used as the backbone of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. Audiences will likely not even be able to take a guess as what could be coming in the 2019 Avengers movie until Avengers: Infinity War hits the silver screen in May, 2018.
