Deadpool is undeniably the hit of the year, with the R-rated comedy going on to gross $782.6 million against a small budget of $58 million. The film was a financial and critical success with both fans and critics alike loving the Merc with a Mouth's theatrical debut (X-Men Origins does not count) so it was only a matter of time before Fox announced the highly anticipated sequel.
With Deadpool being eccentric as ever, the character appeared in a mid-credit sequence in his eponymous film to announce that there will be a sequel and that Cable would star alongside him. Ever since then fans have speculated who could possibly portray Cable on screen. Now, six months later, we finally have some casting rumors regarding the son of Cyclops. And no, it is not Keira Knightly.
On the latest installment of Meet the Movie Press, typically a reliable source when it comes to castings, revealed the front runner for Cable.
"People were talking about Cable from Deadpool 2. There's been a name floating around for Cable for months, hasn't changed, don't know if it's changed. Didn't make any calls about this. This was just the name that has been out there for months. So take this with a gigantic grain of salt. The biggest grain of salt your tiny little brain can imagine. The name that is floating around for Cable right now is Kyle Chandler."
A shock casting to say the least, one that is sure to anger fans who were hoping for Perlman or Lundgren. Chandler is well known for his roles in Martin Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street, and for his Emmy award-winning performance as Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights.
It is a shock casting to say the least if this rumor does come true. The credit sequence for Deadpool had the title character list Mel Gibson, Dolph Ludgren, and Keira Knightly as potential casting possibilities for Cable (Gibson and Lundgren being fan favorites, and Knightly soon becoming a fan favorite afterward) so Chandler comes out of left field.
But the studio is currently looking to cast a member of the X-Force to accompany Deadpool and Cable in the sequel, as well:
"The name for Domino, who is said to be the scene-stealer of the movie, is Mackenzie Davis."
Davis certainly has the look for Domino, and she is a relatively unknown star so it is a risk that Fox looks willing to take. Davis has previously starred in Oscar-nominated film The Martian and is set to appear in the highly anticipated Blade Runner sequel. She's also arguably the best part of AMC's Halt and Catch Fire as Cameron Howe.
Cable was a certainty to appear in the sequel, but the announcement of Domino is sure to excite fans, not the least of which because it points to a potential X-Force movie, as Fox now have Deadpool, Cable, Domino, Psylocke, Wolverine, Archangel and possibly X-23 at their disposal.
You must remember to take these rumors with a pinch of salt, even though Jeff Sneider's has a fairly trusted track record. The film is looking at an early 2017 production date so a casting announcement could be a few months away. There has been no other news yet on Deadpool 2, but what we do know is that Ryan Reynolds, Tim Miller, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick will all be returning in their respective roles.
Who would you rather see as Cable?
