If you have seen Captain America: Civil War, you’re more than likely pumped up for Spider-Man: Homecoming. If you’re a Spidey fan, then all you want in life is a good Spider-Man film, right? Well, me too. Don’t get me wrong; Spider-Man 2 was fantastic, but that was 12 years ago, and it’s time to move on.
Back in March of 2016, it was reported that the Shake It Up actress, Zendaya Maree Coleman, landed a mysterious role in the anticipated Spider-Man reboot. Although it hasn't been confirmed by Marvel Studios or Sony; The Wrap, however, confirmed that Zendaya would, in fact, be playing Mary Jane Watson. In case you’re not familiar with ole M.J., in the comics (and the original Spider-Man trilogy), she is the love interest of Peter Parker. The beautiful Kirsten Dunst portrayed the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.
Some Spidey fans are unsettled by the news because the character is white with natural red hair, but Zendaya is half African-American with brown hair. I do understand the fans’ comments, but you also have to look at the fact that this is a reboot, which means that things may not match from comic to film. For instance, take a look at Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad. That wasn’t your typical “Joker”, but it worked; therefore, I believe the Disney actress has what it takes, and here’s why:
3. Her Fan Base
We all know that Spider-Man: Homecoming is targeting young adults and children as viewers, so why not get someone that’s well known in Disney television shows? Kids from ages 10-15 are probably going to know who this actress is. Earlier this year, she brought home a Blimp Award at Kid’s Choice Awards for her role in K.C. Undercover. That tells me she is a talented actress who loves what she does. I know they didn’t hire her just for this reason, which leads me to another point.
2. Marvel Studios Have a Great Casting Track Record
If you’ve watched the entire MCU (which you should if you haven’t), then you know by now that Marvel Studios does an amazing job with casting for huge roles. Trust me, if Marvel Studios has a huge role like M.J., you better believe they’re going to pick someone that deserves it and has the talent.
1. The MCU Need More Female Leads
Take this for what it’s worth, but we need more females in the MCU. I understand that most superheroes are males, but that doesn’t mean we can only focus on characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, and Spider-Man. That's why I'm looking forward to the release of Captain Marvel. I think that will be a film that’ll be perfect for fans, bring in some fresh material, and have a new role model for females. I have two daughters, and I’m trying to raise them to love superheroes and read them comics and pass off my action figures, so of course, I’m going to look forward to seeing more females being added to this universe.
I know that Black Widow and Scarlet Witch are the main females. I believe that Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen are doing fantastic; I just think this is Marvel’s shot at bringing more females to the big screen. We still have yet to see She-Hulk, Squirrel Girl, Crystal, Power Princess and so much more we could get into. Despite fans reactions to Zendaya as Mary Jane, I think she’ll do great. I’m a huge Spider-Man fan so I still look forward to seeing this movie and I hope you do as well!
