*Warning: The following post contains information on new characters joining Game of Thrones. Continue only if you want to enter the spoiler zone.*
Game of Thrones fans (myself included) love nothing more than speculating on upcoming events. Perhaps it's because we're at the unique stage where the TV show has outrun George R. R. Martin's series of novels, or because we're so immersed in the show it's the only thing that keeps the withdraw symptoms at bay between series, but either way, we love speculating.
The new season's casting calls always provide an rich source of potential lines of enquiry for those of us who like to unpick events before they happen. The Game of Thrones website Watchers on the Wall has done everyone a dutiful service by releasing a list of profiles for Season 7, and it raises some interesting questions.
Find out what the rest of the cast were up to before Game of Thrones below:
While we can never be sure how things will develop when it comes to the hit TV show, the individual profiles can give an inkling of what's to come. Let's not wait any longer, and delve in to the land of speculation.
"Warrior, in the 35 – 45 age range. The character is a tough-looking bruiser with the attack skills of a pit bull, and the actor needs to be great at fighting. He has a 'considerable' amount of dialogue as well. It’s described as an 'excellent part for a top-end actor.' Helpful clues in the description? We know it’s not a Dothraki character as the actor for the role is required to be white, and they’re asking for a neutral and non-posh English accent. This role is currently scheduled to shoot across October."
The above stands out more than Mag the Mighty in an identity parade. This is the one true leading role advertised, and HBO are looking for a "top-end actor" to shoot for a month, which suggests an involved role in Season 7.
Taking the description into account, could the character be a young Robert Baratheon? The former King featured heavily in Season 1, played by Mark Addy, before meeting his demise. But we only got to see him in his older, more weighty years, not at his peak as a feared warrior.
Perhaps we'll see Bran warg to Robert's Rebellion — a war where House Baratheon defeated House Targaryen to become the new rulers of the Seven Kingdoms. As if that's not exciting enough, during that battle, Robert Baratheon killed Rhaegar Targaryen, the now confirmed father of Jon Snow.
The Young Lord
"Young Lord in his late 20’s. He’s a tall, handsome young lord, and the show is looking for a white actor who uses the RP accent. He’s scheduled to shoot in the week commencing September 20th."
This character is filming across a single week, so it won't be an involved role, but with the title "young lord," this is clearly and important character. The description "tall" and "handsome" could easily describe Rhaegar Targaryen. It'd certainly make sense, and could tie in with Robert Baratheon being the "warrior." Could Season 7 take a trip back in time and show the battle between the two? We can dream.
Psst: RP accent stands for "Received Pronunciation", a well spoken style of English spoken mainly by high ranking members of society.

A Well Known Face Travelling To King's Landing?
"City Guard, in his 30’s. The show is casting for a city guard who intercepts a suspicious-looking person on his nightly patrol. They require an RP accent for this one. He’s set to shoot for a week in mid-October."
The City Watch are the exclusive law-enforcement of King's Landing, so on first glance this looks like a minor role. However, the description is intriguing, in particular: "Intercepts a suspicious-looking person."
This suspicious-looking person must be significant, if so, it could be one of the following:
- The Hound: Clegane's mission of vengeance may lead him to seek revenge on his brother, The Mountain, and finally result in Cleganebowl.
- Arya Stark: There's been a lot of speculation that Arya may eventually move to King's Landing and attempt to kill Cersei. Perhaps she'll get caught in the process?
- Jorah Mormont: Lest we forget Jorah and his mission to find a cure for greyscale, which could lead him to King's Landing. Imagine the tragic frustration if he gets within touching distance of a cure and then gets captured. Poor Jorah.
The Essos Connection
Daenerys may well be on her way to Westeros, but that doesn't mean we won't get to see Essos featured in Season 7 of Game of Thrones, far from it. The below profiles all point to some involvement from the East:
"Merchant, in his 40’s. The merchant appears at an inn during a busy evening. They’re seeking a character actor, for a non-combatant role. His appearance is more open, including ethnicity/race. That suggests a character appearing somewhere in Essos- or a place we’ve never been before, since Daenerys is now on the move. This part is scheduled to shoot the first week of November."
"Lovely Lady. Ah yes, what would Game of Thrones be without its courtesans and nudity. The show is casting for an attractive young courtesan who is sure of her own mind. It’s described as a “good speaking part” and casting notes that full nudity is required for the role. Similar to the merchant, the lovely lady’s physical appearance is open, indicating this role is for somewhere on Essos, or at a new location. She’s scheduled to shoot for one week in early October."
"Lieutenant, in his 20’s. The character is described as an athletic, physically fit, and disciplined warrior. Appearance-wise, they’re looking for someone not white, with Middle Eastern descent mentioned. This bears the hallmarks of a Dothraki character description. He’s set to shoot several days across three weeks, between mid-September and mid-November."
The Minor(ish) Roles
The "ish" on the above is essential, because let's face it, in Game of Thrones there's no such thing as a nothing role; all of these characters could lead in to something much bigger. They are:
"General, in the age range 40 – 55. He’s a senior military officer, and they’re looking for a white actor who uses the British RP accent. The actor is needed for the week of September 6th."
Perhaps the General could be a member of the Knights of the Vale, who will have an increased presence in the next season.
"Gate Guard, in his 20’s. The character is described as a “Confident, characterful, straight-talking Northern lad with a great face to play across a very excellent series of scenes.” They’re looking someone with wit, timing, and charisma. He’s currently scheduled to film between mid-October and mid-November."
It looks like "Gate Guard" will have a recurring role, and the accent suggests it'll be up North. Could the "excellent scenes" refer to interaction with Jon Snow or Sansa Stark?
"Priest, in his 60’s. He’s a venerable priest with moral authority and gravitas. The show is seeking a white actor, using an RP accent, with characterful face for this part. He’s scheduled to shoot one week, from September 22nd."
Last but not least, a Priest with "moral authority and gravitas." Could this be someone sent to King's Landing to repair the mess caused following Cersei's destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor?
What are your theories on who the characters could be?
