2. American Psycho

  • Released: 2000
  • Horror Type: Smart Gory Satire

The Set-Up: Mary Harron took on Bret Easton Ellis's 'unfilmable' novel and created gleefully splat-heavy social satire with an unbeatable soundtrack. American Psycho 2 is also on Hulu if you need more gore.

3. Body of Evidence

  • Released: 1993
  • Horror Type: '90s Thriller

The Set-Up: This slightly predictable legal thriller spices up the usual courtroom proceedings by asking the all-important question: did Rebecca Carlson ('90s Madonna on hella form) purposely shag a man to death, or was she simply too sexy for her own good? A total joy for fans of campy thrills.

4. Borderland

  • Released: 2007
  • Horror Type: Cult Horror

The Set-Up: College kids take a trip to Mexico only to get waylaid by a cult devoted to human sacrifice. Chillingly, the story is based on that of drug lord Adolfo Constanzo, a bloodthirsty cult leader who sacrificed innocents with his followers, the Narco-satanists.

5. Cape Fear

The Set-Up: Robert De Niro at his menacing best, Cape Fear outperforms its 'remake' status to bring an expert serial killer chiller, replete with gripping chase scenes and explosive ending. Fantastic.

6. Buried

  • Horror Type: One Man Show

The Set-Up: Paul (Ryan Reynolds) wakes up in a coffin, buried deep underground. With only a cellphone, a lighter and a marker pen, will Paul be found or suffer a slow, agonizing death as he asphyxiates in his grave?

9. The Others

  • Released: 2001
  • Horror Type: Ghost Story

The Set-Up: A family in an old house begin to suspect that they're not alone as ghostly presences make themselves know. Although this film is eerie, it has no gore or swears so is suitable for a PG-13 audience.

10. Theater of Blood

  • Released: 1973
  • Horror Type: Serial Killer Satire

The Set-Up: The inimitable Vincent Price takes revenge on the theater critics who rubbish his play, dispatching his detractors in gaudy set pieces that'd make Jigsaw blush. Utterly, utterly fabulous from start to finish.

  • Released: 2015
  • Horror Type: Horror Comedy

The Set-Up: A Scout's motto is 'Be Prepared', but even can even the finest Scout truly be prepared for a zombie apocalypse? A little daft and a lot gory, Scout's Guide is a funny splat-fest guaranteed to keep a crowd entertained.

The Set-Up: Married Evan (Keanu Reeves) ignores his vows when two gorgeous girls turn up at his house demanding a threesome. The girls' behavior becomes more sinister, and soon Evan is fighting for his life as the illicit tryst turns to terror.
