I have a serious love-hate relationship with horror movies. On the one hand, I find them engaging and wildly entertaining, but on the other I find myself unable to sleep for days after watching a really great one.
One of the first movies that had this dual effect on me was the hit found footage film The Blair Witch Project. It's been almost 20 years since its 1999 release, but now the Blair Witch is back and even more terrifying than ever.
Since Lionsgate's surprise viral marketing campaign announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July, the sequel —simply titled Blair Witch — has already garnered critical acclaim and generated plenty of excitement. Here's the official plot synopsis for the film:
A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.
Where the initial trailer focused on the legacy from the first movie, the latest trailer forces viewers underground. If you have a tendency to feel claustrophobic in tight spaces, this scene might not be for you.
Let's take a closer look at the terrifying new Blair Witch trailer in GIF form.
Not Your Regular Camping Trip
These forest might look idyllic during the daytime, but I wouldn't follow any of my friends in there to stay after dark. Especially if their sister mysteriously disappeared in there decades earlier.
Blair Witch Is Back!
This is when the group immediately regrets every decision leading up to this moment. For some reason, I have the feeling they end up back at the abandoned house.
Down The Rabbit Hole
I don't care what's coming after me, nothing could make me get in that trap door.
A Tight Squeeze
I'm getting some serious Descent vibes from this, so obviously something more sinister is lurking within this tunnel.
That Can't Be Good...
Of course, when you're trapped in an underground tunnel there's nowhere to run. This does not bode well for our characters.
Don't Break The Sticks!
If we learned anything from the first movie, it's that you shouldn't disrespect the Blair Witch. Chances are she'll kill you either way, but it definitely makes her angry.
Blair Witch stars James Allen McCune, Valorie Curry, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Wes Robinson and Corbin Reid. To see the scary new Blair Witch trailer in full, head on over to Collider.
Lionsgate's Blair Witch will be released in theaters on September 16. Check it out, if you're brave enough.
Do you think you'd be able to fend off the Blair Witch?
