After the Game of Thrones Season 6 finale claimed a number of important characters, it only makes sense that an Oscar-winning actor would be the first new addition to the show's upcoming season. Now, actor Jim Broadbent will join the cast of Game of Thrones. Not much is known about his mysterious new character, but we do know that he plays a “significant” role in the coming season.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

It's a matter of fact that no one is safe on Game of Thrones. Regardless of whether a character prays to the Old Gods or the New, George R.R. Martin (and his showrunning disciples David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) kills mercilessly. However, there is one shared attribute that many of the show's dead have in common: They all had roles in the Harry Potter franchise.

Jim Broadbent famously played the Potions master Professor Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, so based on my Harry Potter and Game of Thrones death curse theory (patent pending), he's probably working on borrowed time.

Natalia Tena

  • Harry Potter character: Nymphadora Tonks
  • Game of Thrones character: Osha
  • Final episode: Season 6, Episode 4 "Book of the Stranger"
  • Cause of death: Stabbed in the neck by Ramsay Bolton

Right when you thought Osha might be tough enough to get rid of Ramsay for good, he goes and stabs her in the neck. I guess she was just destined to die in both series.

Ian Whyte

  • Harry Potter character: Madame Olympe Maxime body double
  • Game of Thrones character: Giants Dungo and Wun Wun
  • Final episode: Season 6, Episode "Battle of the Bastards"
  • Cause of death: Shot with arrows

Ian Whyte played a number of stateusque Game of Thrones characters, but did you know he also played the cinematic body double for Madame Maxime? I can almost picture Hagrid and Wun Wun becoming drinking buddies in another universe.

David Bradley

  • Harry Potter character: Argus Filch
  • Game of Thrones character: Walder Frey
  • Final episode: Season 6, Episode 10 "The Winds of Winter"
  • Cause of death: Throat slit by Arya Stark

A decent handful of characters died in the Season 6 finale, but few were quite as satisfying and disgusting as watching Walder Frey realize he's eating his sons before Arya slits his throat. Chilling.

Julian Glover

  • Harry Potter character: The voice of Aragog
  • Game of Thrones character: Grand Maester Pycelle
  • Final episode: Season 6, Episode 10 "The Winds of Winter"
  • Cause of death: Stabbed by Qyburn's little birds

We didn't see Julian Glover's performance in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but we definitely heard him. The actor voiced Hagrid's favorite Acromantula Aragog before playing Grand Maester Pycelle. After six long years on the show, his character finally died at the hands of the creepy little birds.

Ciarán Hinds

  • Harry Potter character: Aberforth Dumbledore
  • Game of Thrones character: Mance Rayder
  • Final episode: "The Wars to Come"
  • Cause of death: Shot with arrow before being burned

The leader of the Free Folk and King-Beyond-the-Wall would have faced a fiery death had Jon Snow not intervened to spare him the pain of being burned alive.

Michelle Fairley

  • Harry Potter character: Mrs. Granger
  • Game of Thrones character: Catelyn Stark
  • Final episode: Season 3, Episode 9 "The Rains of Castamere"
  • Cause of death: Throat slit by Black Walder Rivers

I doubt any Game of Thrones fan has forgotten about The Red Wedding or about how much blood spilled out of Mrs. Granger's throat. I wish I could Obliviate that image from my mind.

Ralph Ineson

  • Harry Potter character: Amycus Carrow
  • Game of Thrones character: Dagmer "Cleftjaw"
  • Final episode: Season 2, Episode 10 "Valar Morghulis"
  • Cause of death: Flayed alive by Ramsay Bolton

We didn't see Dagmer's death, but we know from Ramsay's letter that he betrayed their truce and flayed Dagmer and his men alive in Season 3.

Bronson Webb

  • Harry Potter character: Draco Malfoy's friend
  • Game of Thrones character: Will
  • Final episode: Season 1, Episode 1 "Winter is Coming"
  • Cause of death: Beheaded by Ned Stark

Webb played a small role as Slytherin Boy in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and an equally small but integral role in Game of Thrones. In the series premiere, his character Will is executed for desertion by Ned Stark, who uses the opportunity to teach Jon and Bran a valuable lesson about responsibility.

So far, I think the only Harry Potter actor that's still alive on Game of Thrones is Freddie Stroma, who played Cormac McClaggen. His character Dickon Tarly did just make his first appearance last season, so there's still plenty of time for the curse to play out.
