Guardians of the Galaxy blew the box office away in 2014 to become the highest grossing superhero film of that year. Now, two years later, we're champing at the bit for the return of of our favorite characters. However, we still have a while to go before the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with the film not scheduled to hit theaters until May 5, 2017. After the poster release, we now know that Nebula will be making a return, but what direction will her character take?

Nebula: The Story So Far

Nebula, played by Karen Gillan in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, was a risk for director James Gunn. But the risk paid off and we're set to see her come against Star-Lord and the gang next year.

So, what's the story so far? Well, #Nebula was raised by #Marvel supervillain Thanos. Her adopted sister — and key Guardian member — Gamora was also raised by Thanos, but Gamora has already repented for her past crimes and turned to the good side. However, Nebula stayed with the bad side. She didn't have a huge role in the first film, but she captured something in the audience and we wanted to see her again.

It can't have been easy growing up with a father like #Thanos, a.k.a the Dark Lord. Thanos, who desires to obtain the powerful Infinity Stones in a bid to control the universe, commands a deadly army known as Chitauri that inspires fear in all who encounter them. Growing up with Thanos, Nebula and #Gamora were subjected to torture and humiliation, so it's no wonder Nebula is feared for her ruthlessness.

At the end of the first film, Nebula cut all ties with her adopted sister by chopping off her own hand. We're assuming that with the technology they have, she's somehow grown another mitt back, but we're still in the dark about who she really is and the details of her past. In the #sequel, it would be nice to gain some more insight into this intriguing character, whose return is expected to wreak havoc on Gamora and co.

Nebula has a very destructive past. She massacred the Xandarians, schemed to gain power and sought control over the universe, taking over from Thanos. This led to a war between them, which was eventually won by Thanos.

What Is Nebula Capable Of?

Nebula has many strengths, making her a force to be reckoned with. The first movie may have left us wanting to see even more of her powers, which include:

  • Superhuman strength
  • Superhuman durability
  • Superhuman agility
  • Regenerative healing

With this in mind, it would be wise for the Guardians to keep an eye out for Nebula, as she's certainly not finished with them yet. She never got to achieve what she set out to do in the first film, failing to help Ronan destroy 1,000 planets so that he would kill Thanos for her. Will she be back to try again?

If she does make a return, this could spell some explosive fight scenes, and we all love a good fight. Nebula is on the poster with the main characters, suggesting that she'll be playing a pivotal role in the storyline, so expect to see a lot of her.

Sister Act

Undoubtedly the sequel will delve into the relationship between Nebula and Gamora, and that will mean more screen time for the two of them together. We've often seen villains become unlikely allies for the good side, and this could happen in Guardians Vol. 2. After all, they are sisters and endured the same awful upbringing. Working together wouldn't be so bad, would it?

So you yes, Nebula could change her allegiance. In the synopsis revealed by Marvel, there is one line that stands out particularly, and it's a phrase that supports my theory of Nebula joining the good side:

"Old foes become new allies."

Nebula could start off creating chaos before slowly, with the help of Gamora, joining the good side. Seeing Nebula become all good may be disappointing for some fans because we love a badass, Loki-esque character, so it would be nice if she stayed a little evil and ruthless.

Nebula has always been a villain, which means a change in allegiance seems unlikely, but there is a chance it could happen. No other Marvel film has been kept so tightly under wraps, so we don't know much about the plot line, but that doesn't mean we can't speculate. No doubt the character of Nebula will be embarking on a compelling journey, so keep an eye out for any spoilers between now and the film's premiere.
