With the CW's mega-hit The Vampire Diaries about to begin its final season, it seems like now is an appropriate time to take a stroll down Mystic Falls' memory lane. Over the past eight years, The Vampire Diaries has thrilled, captivated and compelled us. But it's also provided us with some very emotional moments. You know the moments I'm talking about — the ones that either have us bawling on the floor in a mess, or the ones that have us squealing inside because we know we're about to witness something nice or romantic. Whether your "Team Stelena" or "Team Delena," there's no denying the sheer power of these moments — either way, our "feels" are a mess.
So as we prepare to bid farewell to our beloved Vampire Diaries, let's take a look back at the best feel-inducing moments of the past eight years.
1. Elena Invites Stefan In For The First Time
Episode: "Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1)
Back where it all began: We got to know Stefan as the good-natured vampire who fell in love with human Elena. The two were instantly connected and fell for each other quite quickly. Despite showing up at her door already, Stefan returned to Elena's house later to check on her. After smiling, she invited him inside — and we would soon learn exactly how important that was for #vampires. He smiled and entered, and The Vampire Diaries had truly begun.
2. Elena Dances With Damon At Miss Mystic Falls Contest
Episode: "Miss Mystic Falls" (Season 1, Episode 19)
When Stefan succumbed to human blood and disappeared, Elena was left without a dance partner for the Miss Mystic Falls contest. Luckily, Damon stepped in and somehow flawlessly remembered the choreography from the original contest 145 years earlier. What followed was a passionate moment as two were unable to draw their eyes away from each other. As a Stelena fan myself, even I couldn't deny the chemistry here. Not a single word was said and yet, it was one of the most powerful moments of Season 1. And that, my friends, was the beginning of the Delena saga.
3. Katherine Reminisces About Loving Stefan
Episode: "Memory Lane" (Season 2, Episode 4)
After returning to Mystic Falls, nobody seemed to believe Katherine when she claimed she loved Stefan. After all — she was evil, manipulative and selfish. However, in this moment, Katherine gazed at the moon and reminisced about that fateful night 145 years ago where Stefan became a vampire. And we finally saw the truth: she did love Stefan.
4. Rose's Death
Episode: "The Descent" (Season 2, Episode 12)
Damon and Rose instantly hit it off, sharing some intense chemistry. However, not long after they were in each other's lives, Rose was bitten by a werewolf. As she deteriorated, Damon was forced to face his humanity and struggled, big time. In the end, he gave in and took Rose to paradise, giving her a beautiful dream of the English countryside before he gently put a stake through her heart, ending her suffering.
The dream, the music, Rose's smile and Damon's kind act all made this a beautiful moment. Admit it, you cried like a baby.
5. Elena Kisses A Dying Damon
Episode: "As I Lay Dying" (Season 2, Episode 22)
After a season of acting out and committing unpardonable sins — including his almost successful attempt to permanently kill Elena's little brother Jeremy — Damon Salvatore found himself dying after a werewolf bite. And it was Elena who came to his aid and spent what they both thought were his last few moments together.
The feverish Damon admitted his love for Elena who forgave him for everything he had done. And in one emotionally charged moment, Elena placed a gentle kiss on his lips to comfort him. And even though we all knew that Damon would be cured, that didn't stop us all from bawling our eyes out at this beautiful moment.
6. The Gang Pay Tribute To Alaric
Episode: "Do Not Go Gentle" (Season 3, Episode 20)
When Alaric decided not to complete the transition into an original vampire for fear of his dark side destroying the vampire race, it became clear that the end was nigh for everyone's favorite history teacher. Elena and Jeremy embraced their guardian one final time, saying goodbye.
But as he walked Elena to the door of the Salvatore crypt, he didn't expect what he saw next. The entire gang — Stefan, Damon, Caroline, Tyler, Matt, Bonnie and Meredith, followed by Elena and Jeremy — stood outside the crypt, surrounded by lit candles as The Fray's beautiful "Be Still" aptly played in the background. Alaric struggled to hold it together — and so did all of us — as he nodded at them one final time. One of the show's most moving moments, and it gets me every time.
7. Damon Talks To Alaric's Grave
Episode: "Memorial" (Season 4, Episode 2)
As the gang lit lanterns to pay tribute to their lost loved ones, Damon being Damon refused. But soon afterwards, he sat in the cemetery complaining about how everyone else was acting like children. And while that may not seem all that moving, we soon found out that he was venting at his best friend Alaric's grave.
But the most moving part was the surprise appearance from Alaric himself as a ghost in the background, listening to his friend complain and mock even him. Alaric watches as Damon leaves the bottle behind before quietly remarking that he missed him too. An unexpectedly touching moment that was subtle but beautiful.
8. The Gang At Graduation
Episode: "Graduation" (Season 4, Episode 23)
Season 4 put so much emphasis on graduation, with much of the gang worried whether they'd make it there or not. And while certain people — such as off-emotions Elena —didn't think it was important, Caroline got her wish and all of the gang were together on graduation. And even though Bonnie had died, she still managed to graduate as a ghost that could interact for the day.
There was something so powerful about this simple scene. Graduation is somewhat of a routine event, but for Elena, Stefan, Caroline, Bonnie and Matt, it was something that many of them never thought they would see. They had made it, and in that moment, everything was perfect.
9. Bonnie's Memorial
Episode: "For Whom The Bell Tolls" (Season 5, Episode 4)
Admittedly, Season 5 wasn't the strongest, but there were some incredible moments. And one of those came when Jeremy finally revealed that Bonnie had died. In one of the show's most moving moments, the gang came together to mourn their fallen friend, as Bonnie communicated through Jeremy from the other side, telling her friends how much she loved them all. For any fan of the show who had gotten truly attached to these characters, it's impossible to get through this scene without reaching for the tissues.
10. Damon And Bonnie Are Trapped On The Other Side
Episode: "Home" (Season 5, Episode 22)
When the Other Side was collapsing, the gang came up with this incredible plan to reverse the way things worked, using the anchor Bonnie. Instead of the dead passing through her to the Other Side, their dead friends could pass through her back to life. And it worked so well, until the window closed and Damon — who hatched the elaborate plan — was stuck on the Other Side as it went down. And both he and Bonnie held hands as they disappeared into the unknown.
But he didn't depart before a moment with Elena that had us all screeching. An unusually calm Damon tenderly caressed Elena's tearful face as he bid her farewell from beyond. Everything here — the dialogue, the music and the moment — was perfect. And Nina Dobrev delivered her strongest performance ever, and quite frankly we all felt exactly how Elena did!
As we prepare to welcome The Vampire Diaries back into our lives one last time, be ready for a truck load of feels — the show has never had any problems attacking them before and you can bet they'll be pulling out all the stops to make us bawl in the final season.
As the last vampire standing from the #youngadult vampire craze, it's no wonder that the show appealed so many people. I don't think I've ever seen another #TV show that has such perfect emotional moments. With the right music, the strong performances and the touching dialogue, The Vampire Diaries always cooks up the best recipes to make us cry. And expect to see that happen a few more times as the beloved series draws to a close.
I'm pretty sure that your tissue is drenched with your tears by now! But be sure to get a new one when The Vampire Diaries Season 8 premieres Friday October 21st on The CW! What is your favorite emotional moment from the series? Let us know in the comments!
