Marvel Studios has been hard at work lately laying the groundwork for the rapid expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man 3The Avengers: Age Of UltronGuardians of the Galaxy and other mystical worlds in Thor: The Dark World
One of these stories that suddenly seems like a very real possibility is Kree-Skrull War, one of the most beloved Avengers sagas of all time. Over the last few months, pieces have been put in place that not only make this storyline a real possibility, but in my opinion almost guarantee that it will soon happen. And it should happen, as the story is a classic that Marvel is still referencing in its comics to this day. I’m going to explain the story, break down the pieces involved in making it happen, and why I think that Marvel Studios owes this story to the fans.
Kree-Skrull War was written by Roy Thomas and published by Marvel Comics in 1972. It tells the story of an intergalactic conflict between the alien races the Kree and the Skrulls that spills over and threatens the planet Earth (the Avengers eventually save the planet). Earth is positioned half way between the home galaxies of the Kree and the Skrull and thus both races seek to either conquer or destroy the planet in order to gain a tactical advantage in their war. Earth is repeatedly shown to be just a blip on the radar in the giant universe and is treated as nothing more than an advantageous beachhead in the minds of the alien races. The storyline has a massive scale to it and would fit in perfectly with the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Recent casting developments and rumors lead me to believe that this story is going to happen as several key players from the saga are about to be introduced in various Marvel films. Joss Whedon has confirmed that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be added on to the Avengers in Avengers 2 and that they will be playing major roles. These two characters play a major part in the Kree-Skrull storyline as members of the Avengers.
Another key player for the Avengers in the saga is Vision. Vision is an android that was indirectly created by the efforts of Ant-Man (who by the way is supposed to get a movie in phase 3). While currently not in the picture there are plenty of rumors that Marvel is in fact looking to cast Vision and that none other than Vin Diesel will be playing him. This stems from an incident last year where Diesel switched his Facebook profile picture to one of Vision and then quickly took the picture down. This alone does not constitute a casting, however last month Diesel stated that Marvel had requested to meet with him for an unknown reason. While it remains unclear if they truly wish to cast him as Vision or some other character, it still leaves the possibility of the character appearing. Lastly but certainly not least is the recent news that Lee Pace will be playing Ronan the Accuser in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy
Most of the pieces are coming into place for this story and hopefully Marvel Studios sees the opportunity here. Kree-Skrull War is one of the few classic Marvel storylines that does not even mention Spiderman or the X-men. This presents a storyline free of legal complications that can easily be turned into one of the most epic comic book movies yet.
