Emma Watson goes all 'Pretty Woman' for 'The Bling Ring' shoot
I think it's safe to say that Emma Watson has completely shed her clean-cut image in this recent photo shoot for British GQ. Watson can be seen gracing the cover of the men's style magazine to promote her upcoming movie The Bling Ring, and appears in character as Nicki, a fame-obsessed thief and wearer of Pretty Woman-inspired dresses:
The Bling Ring follows the true story of a group of teens who steal from celebrities and Watson revealed what inspired her to take the role in the movie, admitting:
When I read the script and I realized that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it's become to our society, I had to do it. The character is everything that I felt strongly against - she's superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She's all of these things and I realized that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate? But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job, or my role as an actress, could be.
With the recent relative success of Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers, meditations on celebrity worship and the obsession with fame and instant wealth are in vogue at the moment. That being said, the irony of Watson describing the character as superficial, materialistic and vain while at the same time appearing on men's style mag shouldn't be lost on anybody.
The Bling Ring won't be in theaters until June, but we've got the teaser trailer for you to check out. Once you're done with that, let me know what you think about Watson's new image in the comments below.
