Is an Exorcist TV series in the works?
Today, Deadline is reporting that Morgan Creek has the rights to the property and a new take on the material will be penned by Fantastic Four reboot writer Jeremy Slater. Roy Lee, who executive produced both The Departed and The Ring, is set to executive produce the horror series. Morgan Creek allegedly had an Exorcist limited series project with writer Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) in the works last year, but it never got off the ground.
The Exorcist is joining the likes of Psycho prequel television series Bates Motel, and new NBC series about the murderous man with a penchant for brains, Hannibal. Given the recent rise of movie-adapted, horror-based television, I'm not surprised someone is taking a stab (sorry) at The Exorcist. Still, turning it into some weekly TV show just for the sake putting something out because horror TV is back in vogue, would be pretty wrong.
I'm cautiously optimistic with this one. At first I couldn't see how they could make The Exorcist into a series, but then I remembered it will be based on the book. If you've read it, you'll know that the book spans several months, in which Regan's descent was much more gradual than portrayed in 1973's movie. So, there's definitely potential for a short series, but perhaps not much beyond that.
How do you feel about the possibility of an Exorcist TV show?
