Rumorville: Fox Offered Hugh Jackman $100 Million to Keep Playing Wolverine?
The last decade of Hugh Jackman's life has been dominated by all things Wolverine. Jackman has played the adamantium clawed mutant in a record seven films: X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, The Wolverine and of course, the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.
So, really, nobody would blame him if he felt like moving on to different things – he's certainly put the time in to the franchise. But Fox are hoping to persuade him differently, and rumor has it they're willing to shell out bucketloads of dollar to ensure he does: 100 million dollars for four movies.
We've heard from anonymous insiders who spoke with The National Enquirer (via Cinema Blend) that Fox have offered Jackman $100 million to play Wolverine in four more movies. Of course, The National Enquirer isn't the most reliable source in the world – but some of their scoops do turn out to be true, and this does sound plausible.
However, reportedly Jackman's taking the time to mull it over.
'It's not every day an actor gets offered this kind of paycheck, but Hugh vowed never to lock himself into any multipicture deals after X-Men,' a 'close pal' told the magazine. 'He hasn't given any kind of answer yet, so at least he's considering it.'
The actor has previously implied that he's ready for different projects, admitting earlier this summer that he wasn't sure that he wanted to return for James Mangold's The Wolverine. He didn't seem convinced that another Wolverine film was a great plan:
'I wasn't even sure after the first [stand alone] film if I would do [it]. I won't say never, because I'm still loving it. But there would have to be a pretty compelling reason.'
This said, the actor's been sending out mixed signals, with Comicbook.com reporting that around the same time he also told Fandango 'I'm enjoying it more than ever...they are going to have to pry this role out of my hands...trust me...or the claws.'
Either way, we can see why Fox is so willing to spend heavily to keep Jackman around: they're clearly invested in building up X-men as a franchise and Wolverine's arguably the most popular character in the franchise. Also, Mangold's The Wolverine has generated approximately $304 million worldwide, which means the studio could be interested in another Wolverine solo movie.
Jackman's roles outside of the X-men franchise over the past few years signal an interest in slightly artier movies: he's starred in lots of non-superhero fare, including Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, Christopher Nolan's The Prestige and even earned an Oscar nomination for Tom Hooper's Les Miserables. Clearly, he'll be offered meaty roles if he walks away from Wolverine – so I guess the decision boils down to money. Does the already wealthy Jackman want to be wealthier? Let me know what you think below (and if you believe this rumor's actually true).
