Pixar used to be a bastion of original movie-making, but it seems in recent years (perhaps after its acquisition by Disney?) the studio has turned more and more towards sequels. If you're not a fan of this development, then you probably won't be over the moon to hear about the upcoming Cars 3.

The project has been on people's minds ever since the rather disappointing Cars 2, but now it seems like we've got semi-official confirmation regarding the project. Michael Willis, a historical consultant and voice actor on Cars and Cars 2, had this to say in a recent radio interview with WGBZ. He said:

Cars 3 we're coming back to the road. And we're coming back to 66 into 99. That's the road that runs right through Central California.

You might think it's strange that a movie series about talking cars has a historical consultant, but apparently it does. Willis, who is the author of Route 66: The Mother Road, also provided the voice of the Sheriff in the previous Cars films. Now, he's not exactly the head of Pixar, so his words aren't gospel, but this is the most prominent statement we've heard yet concerning the sequel.

Now, although Cars 2 wasn't exactly loved by critics, it made a shed load of cash at the box office. Furthermore, the film series has made many millions of dollars in merchandising alone. I think we're beginning to see why Disney want a third movie.

What do you think? Do you mind seeing a third Cars movie, or is it time this franchise is scrapped? Let us know below.
