Honestly, we should just save our breath when it comes to casting predictions for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
. Last week’s rumor that Lionsgate was courting Robert Pattinson to play former Games winner and resident Don Juan, Finnick Odair, turned out to be a complete fabrication. Now E!‘s Marc Malkin claims that according to his source, the three front runners for the part are Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch and Garrett Hedlund. Or… a complete unknown. The good money is on the unknown, because the rule of franchises is that you don’t cast big stars. You make the stars…

Armie Hammer is already a fairly established name, having successfully ridden the Social Network momentum to land a high-profile (if mildly ridiculous) role in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar. He was also Prince Charming in Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror, and will next star opposite Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger
.
Taylor Kitsch had his go at a franchise hopeful with John Carter, which turned out to be a flop for Disney. You can also catch him in Peter Berg’s robots-at-sea orgy, otherwise known as Battleship
, and in Oliver Stone’s upcoming Savages.
Of the three, Garrett Hedlund is the more likely candidate (after the unknown, of course). He just premiered On the Road
in Cannes, and will appear in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, which should further prove that he’s a talented actor. Most people just know him from TRON though. All of the above would indicate that these three hunks are way too famous to appear in The Hunger Games sequel, but who the hell knows? At least they look the part.
And if you’re not happy with them, here are some other names that fans have been kicking around for the part of Finnick:

Kellan Lutz
Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz is certainly dreamy, and beefy enough to carry Peeta across the forest. But, Finnick is also from the fishing district and grew up by the sea, and some would argue that Lutz doesn’t have a swimmer’s built. Swimmers have necks…

Alex Pettyfer
We’ll soon be seeing a lot of Alex Pettyfer’s fine physique in Steven Soderbergh’s stripper romp Magic Mike
, but would he make a good Finnick? Um, yes!
Chris Hemsworth
Hemsworths unite! Because the only thing better than a Hemsworth brother is two Hemsworth brothers together in one film!

Paul Wesley
Could Finnick have been a vampire in another life? Maybe on CW’s The Vampire Diaries?

Ryan Kwanten
Ryan Kwanten aka True Blood‘s Jason Stackhouse has the charm and arrogance…
