Tom Cruise has had his issues over the years, which caused his career to take a dip for a while, but after Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, it’s safe to say that Cruise is back in formand he just can’t get enough of huge Hollywood projects. He just signed on to The Magnificent Seven

and now he’s entered talks to make Top Gun 2, a proposed sequel to one of the biggest films of his career.

Speaking to MTV at the Rock of Ages

premiere, Cruise revealed the status of his involvement with Top Gun 2. There’s nothing concrete yet, but it sounds like he feels the need… the need for speed.

The project has attracted a lot of the original collaborators: director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are already on board. There are even rumors of Val Kilmer reprising his role as Iceman. With all of the original big names back, it’s looking like we might get a sequel worthy of the original, which Cruise confirmed would be the group’s focus.

I hope we can figure this out to go do it again… If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot ‘Top Gun’

Revisiting old franchises seems to be the hip thing these days: A Good Day to Die Hard

or Terminator 5 anyone? The problem here is that Top Gun is synonymous with a younger, fresher Cruise, before the Church of Scientology and the institution of Hollywood celebrity intervened. Should he really be returning to his early material now, or will it risk alienating fans of the original?
