Imagine Entertainment has announced that theyre remaking the movie based on George Orwell’s incredible novel 1984

. Interesting or infuriating?

This will be the first trip to the big screen for the dystopian classic that led us (sort of) to the Big Brother TV franchise since, well, 1984. It could go either way. Although pop culture hasn’t really made much direct reference to Orwell’s novel since the 80s aside from an opera in 2005 there have been a string of what can only be described as Orwellian dystopias since the first movie adaptation think , , , … I could go on. It looks like movie-makers are obsessed with the idea of power and chaos in distant (or not so distant) lands, right now.

Would a remake be something we’d want to watch, then? It’ll probably be entertaining and informative. And it’s a theme that will most likely appeal to a large audience. But of course it isn’t necessary. At this early stage, it’s pretty impossible to tell how it might play out.

There certainly appears to be a good team behind the project writing the screenplay is Noah Oppenheim, whose career as a screenwriter is not a typical one; he has a background in news, having previously worked as a producer of The TODAY Show. Hopefully, this means he’ll act as a good informant in the crossover between media and government surveillance. What’s more, Gina Rosenblum, who produced the 1984 version of the movie, is also co-producing this adaptation. She obviously didn’t get enough of it the first time around. This could be really positive for the remake, because she’ll know the territory.

1984 could shape up to be a great movie, if Rosenblum and Oppenheim play their cards right. My only glaringly obvious reservation is the fact that I do not want to hear people drivel on about the storyline having never read the book. If this movie gets made, it’ll just give all those socio-political wannabes the loose basis of a discussion for which they don’t really know anything about. If that applies to you go and read the book before you even consider reading our next piece of 1984 movie news, which mark my words will be coming soon!
