Four years ago Arnaud Desplechins family drama was running in the competition in the Cannes Film Festival. While the film didnt win anything, it cemented its directors reputation as one of Frances most assured and interesting filmmakers. Then came nothing!

But, luckily, according to Deadline, Desplechin finally will make another feature. An intriguing one, even.

Jimmy Picard is the true story of the friendship between ethnologist and psychoanalyst Georges Devereux and the World War II veteran Jimmy Picard, a Plains Indian of the Blackfoot nation. The setting is the ‘Winter Hospital’ in Topeka, Kansas, where Devereux treated Picard, who was experiencing unexplainable medical symptoms in the aftermath of WWII.

The protagonists are played by two of the more magnetic actors around. Renowned mumbler and Academy Award winner Benicio del Toro will play Picard, while French actor Matthieu Amalric, whom you probably will know as villain from Quantum of Solace and the French criminal with an inscrutable agenda in Steven Spielbergs will play Devereux.

The director and stars should assure taht Jimmy Picard isn’t your usual soul-healing, touchy-feely Hollywood Oscar fare.

The film is based Georges Devereux non-fiction work Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian.
