Fans of the Bourne movies might finally get to see which action spy protagonist is more badass: Matt Damon, aka Jason Bourne, or Jeremy Renner, aka Aaron Cross. In a recent interview, The Bourne Legacy producer Frank Marshall talked about a potential follow-up Bourne movie:
My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.
This excites me. A lot. The Bourne Legacy was recently pushed back a week due to fear of competing for audiences with Total Recall
and, more likely, a desire to step out from under the shadow of The Dark Knight Rises. Although we’ll have to wait until August 10th to pick up where the left off to catch Renner in action as Aaron Cross (or ‘Kenneth Gibson’), I’m already preparing for this set-to-be-sweet action flick of the usual Paul Greengrass caliber. Will Renner match up with Damon in the upcoming movie? He’s obviously not Damon’s Jason Bourne, so who is he? According to Renner himself, he’s:
Coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this… He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the programme. Hes a person who wants to be part of something… to have a sense of purpose. But then its taken away.
Renner’s character is pretty much the furthest away we could get from Bourne’s, then. Bourne has a massively tormented past, and his life was slowly consumed by his membership in Medusa, and later Treadstone. When we watch Damon in the role, it’s also evident that he is relentlessly fighting against his previous behavioral modification and that all he wants is to become David Webb again. Renner’s character, however, signed up to his life as a spy and seems to be mega into it. Perhaps it has something to do with the Rachel Weisz sidekick.
This movie is a stand-alone project and there is no current on-screen link between Renner and Damon. The easiest way to think of The Bourne Legacy
is an expansion or a reveal of the previous movies. But the world they’re making enhances, advances and invites Jason Bournes return. How do you think these two clashing characters would react to each other on screen? I have an inkling that there would be some pretty beefy testosterone-fuelled competition. This incredible character profile, paired with Renner’s previous performances in , The Avengers
, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and really, really makes me want to believe that this pairing up of the badass duo in a future movie this dream of mine will actually happen. Marshall DID say that:My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.
So he’d better not be pulling our legs. What do you think?
