People occasionally deride comic books as one-dimensional and just for boys, but those people are idiots who have obviously never actually read a decent comic book. All the greatest heroes have equally great partners who are often just as cool and feisty as they are. Check out our favorite examples from recent and upcoming films.

Clark Kent & Lois Lane

One of the most famous comic book love stories of all time, Clark and Lois are synonymous with the theme of love; like Romeo and Juliet, if Romeo was faster than a speeding bullet and practically indestructible. Come to think of it, a couple of decent superheroes would’ve livened up Shakespeare to no end. When I think of these two I’m personally reminded of great on screen pairings like Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve, though I’m sure Man of Steel

actor Henry Cavill will have a beautiful Lois Lane of his own to love in Amy Adams.

Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy

An obvious choice; The Amazing Spider-Man

‘s more romantic focus and the great chemistry between our favorite actress of the moment Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield cemented the relationship between the two in our mind. It’s been argued that while Mary Jane Watson fell in love with Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy fell in love with Peter Parker. Spidey’s first love was a huge part of the comics and made the resulting tragedy even more sad. The strength of this role alone is just one of the reasons that we love Emma Stone.

Tony Stark & Virginia ‘Pepper’ Potts

Probably my favorite will-they-won’t-they romance; it seems the only people who haven’t realized the two of them are perfect together are Tony and Pepper. It’s got to be difficult dealing with a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist but Pepper takes it in her stride. It always seems they’re together as couple, but it’s never clearly said, so are they or aren’t they? They seemed to be in The Avengers but not quite so much in Iron Man 2. That gets us thinking, what exactly happened between Iron Man 2 and The Avengers that changed things? She’s probably one of the few people who is actually a match for the fast-talking womanizer Stark, and you can be sure that he knows it. Look forwards to Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow sizzling on screen in Iron Man 3

next May. Personally I’d love for Paltrow to don her own suit of armor and become Rescue, but I think we’ll probably have to wait a while for that one.

Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle

Whether it’s as Catwoman and Batman or Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle, this pair of crime fighters have serious chemistry. Add to this well documented and intensely tense relationship Christian Bale’s gritty, realistic Batman and the stunning Anne Hathaway and you’ve got a serious comic book movie romance on your hands. The pair look set to butt heads and tear up the screen as Gotham’s greatest couple in The Dark Knight Rises

next Friday. Catwoman is a cool kick-ass chick in her own right and just imagine if they’d managed to get Harley Quinn and Heath Ledger’s Joker in this film too. Now then we’d have had a pair of love stories that are as cool as they are crazy.

Obviously those are all big and hugely popular romances, but there are other subtle and deeply interesting stories that haven’t yet been brought to the big screen. Which superhero couple do you think has the best chemistry, and which would you l
