I believe we have The Avengers to thank for this. Truly I do. Warner Bros. and DC have spent the better part of this year looking at everything Marvel did right with their box-office Hulk (heh), and they want a piece of that pie.
That’s why they’re taking Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s The Dark Knight Rises character, Robin John Blake, and giving him the keys to the batmobile. For real, and sooner than you think too. Warner Bros., not content to let us wait for the return of the Dark Knight in his own rebooted franchise, or the even more anticipated (if that’s possible) Justice League movie, are moving forward with plans to continue Nolan’s universe ASAP.
We already know that Christopher Nolan is working with Zack Snyder and the creators of the upcoming Superman movie as a producer, but now it seems like Warner Bros. want more than just his guiding hand on their Man of Steel. They and DC are looking to bring at least 2 of his Dark Knight universe characters into their Justice League/Man of Steel continuity.
Drew McWeeny at Hitflix is reporting that:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt absolutely will be appearing in “Justice League” as the new Batman.
They’re a long way from filming anything “Justice League” related, but they appear to be solidifying deals for Gordon-Levitt and, potentially, at least one other actor from the Nolan films to do something.
Lets look at the Warner Bros./DC slate in the coming years, shall we? First up, we have Man of Steel in 2013, then a potential Justice League movie in 2015, followed by a Batman Reboot in 2016. If JGL and his mystery The Dark Knight Rises co-star are arriving at the party earlier than the Justice League, then they’re left with only one option for a ride to said party.
America’s boy scout and designated party driver for all super powered gatherings — Superman.
That’s right, what we’re looking at here folks is the possibility of Joseph Gordeon-Levitt appearing as Batman in next year’s Man of Steel. I just lost my shit.
I know some weren’t fans of the Robin reveal at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, but personally I felt just the right level of spine tingle when he picked up his GPS system from the overly flirty secretary. I’ve written at length how I’d love to see the character return, and if Warner Bros. were to go ahead with this, they would have a hero who encompasses the best of what both characters bring to the table.
Again, DC have been keeping a sharp eye on the success of Marvel’s flagship franchise, and though they’re running the playbook backwards, they’re bringing out the big guns to do it right. I’m more excited for Man of Steel now than ever before; there was already a lot of gravity there in that trailer; the implications of this news on the film is massive. Consider it a shot across the bow at Marvel and Disney.
Is this everything you hoped and dreamed for a new Batman? To me, it is beyond my wildest; I have the highest of hopes that JGL is going to kick every variety of ass as Batman. He’ll bring a completely new nuance to a character I already love, and I can’t wait to see what that is.
It’s a brave new world of awesome crossovers and casting; once again we have Marvel’s The Avengers to thank for it.
