Avengers: Endgame is reportedly the final ride for Chris Evans as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nothing is confirmed yet, but Evans has hinted at it and his contract ends with the fourth Avengers film.

But none of this means Steve Rogers is going to die in the film. Fan theories have all pointed to this happening given Evans' status, but a new theory presents a happier ending for Rogers.

Time Travel Dreams

It all revolves around the hinted at time travel we'll see in the next film. The Quantum Realm in the back of Scott Lang's van is the key, and that's where Reddit user InGenNateKenny lays out their theory. For them, Cap is going to travel back to the period where it all began, go on that date he left behind, and get back together with Peggy Carter:

And he stays. He hangs up his shield, and sets down for the life he was going to live before sacrificing himself. For a person who gave so much, it would be a fitting ending. Ignoring the implications of confusing timeline stuff, it would be quite cool. And he could appear in future movies if they really wanted him this way.

Age Of Ultron

So he's not dead. He's not gone forever. He's just out of the picture, enjoying a retirement of sorts in the past. And it's the dream sequence from Age Of Ultron where Rogers is sent back to the dance with Peggy that gives our Reddit theorizer their real fuel:

While I'm not too sure that those visions are overtly relevant to the MCU as a large, I think it's telling that Cap went back to that moment, and the date he never had. Even many years later, it still means so much to him. End of Captain America: The First Avenger, also had the line about missing the date.

Not So Fast?

But hey, not so fast! Evans was forced to go out and clarify what he meant when he tweeted out all that stuff about playing Cap being "a pleasure" and making it seem like he's done according to ComicBook:

"I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.”

'Not Done Yet'

So could our new fan theory fall apart? Is Steve Rogers still going to be needed in the future for another major Avengers event? The Russo Brothers added more fuel to the fire by saying we still don't know what it means when they say Evans isn't done yet:

"I think it was more emotional for him than it was us because he’s not done yet," Russo said. "I won’t explain what that means but fans will soon understand what I’m talking about."

Bring Back Peggy

How about this? Instead of going all the way to the past to get with Peggy Carter, could The First Avenger bring Peggy back to the present with him, to live her youth again with Cap in the present?

That's likely more of a stretch than the initial theory, but hey, it's worth a thought.

The main thing, we all want a happy ending for Steve Rogers.
