ROGUE ONE

A STAR WARS STORY

Rebellions Are Built On Hope

How much freedom would you give up to attain spiritual security? Alternative religions, and cults large and small, promise roads to enlightenment and salvation. When these organizations, often driven by one charismatic personality, offer so much, trading trappings of “normal” life for the benefits of spiritual fulfillment might seem like a good idea. But what happens when those magnetic leaders turn out to have their own best interests, and not ours, in mind?

Hulu’s original series The Path follows people, played by actors including Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan, Hugh Dancy, and 2001: A Space Odyssey star Keir Dullea, involved in a new age belief system called Meyerism. The organization, founded by Dr. Stephen Meyer (Dullea) preaches spiritual elevation through empathy and the allegation of suffering, but a power struggle behind the scenes is driving Meyerism into spiritually murky waters.

As the show’s second season premieres, we look back at the first season with a two-part primer that will become a show bible to retuning fans and new viewers alike. To help you climb a ladder of enlightenment to greater knowledge about cults and the stranger corners of film storytelling that inspires Hulu’s series, we’ve also created guides to bizarre real cults and the weird movies that help make sense of the darker human impulses that guide The Path.
