'The Handmaid's Tale' Plot:
Based on Margret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name, The Handmaid's Tale's plot is set in the Republic of Gilead, which was once the United States but is now a republic based around a theocratic, military dictatorship. Exploring themes of authoritarianism, gender, power, identity, sexual orientation, bigotry, autonomy and human rights to name but a few, The Handmaid's Tale's plot is as complex as it is pressingly relevant for the modern day.
Focusing on the life of protagonist Offred (Moss), a woman who is being held prisoner for her reproductive abilities as a "handmaid"due to a mass declining birthrate as a result of pollution and widespread STI's causing sterility, we follow her as she struggles with the oppressive regime to which she is subjected to.
'The Handmaid's Tale' Cast & Characters:
- Elisabeth Moss as Offred
Leading the pack of The Handmaid's Tale cast & characters is Elisabeth Moss as protagonist, Offred. As the novel is written from her first person perspective, we can expect Moss to have a similar role in the Show and also acting as the narrator which is demonstrated in her voiceover in the trailer.
Considered by the Gilead society to be a shamed, wanton woman due to the fact that she married a man who was previously divorced when all divorces have since been nullified by the new government, Offred is therefore seen in the eyes of society as an adulteress. Forced to become a "handmaid" to Commander Fred and his wife Serena Joy, who is infertile, and separated from her husband and daughter, Offred, as all the other handmaids must, has to endure a lot of suffering.
- Joseph Fiennes as The Commander
The intellectual Commander who has a somewhat checkered past with the Republic and its architecture, embarks on a very unusual relationship with Offred to whom he has to have monthly sexual relations due to the fact that his wife Serena is unable to bare either of them children. However, it isn't long before Offred reveals a dark secret about the fate of his previous handmaid.
- Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy
The barren wife of the Commander, Serena has to endure knowing that her husband is having sex with Offred because she is unable to bare him children. Formerly a televangelist, the republic has done everything it can to hide her past as a TV anchor and consequently robs her of all her power and public recognition. Her relationship with Offred, is therefore a highly complicated one.
- Alexis Bledel as Ofglen
Offred's handmaid neighbor, Ofglen is a much more rebellious handmaid than Offred, and is part of the 'Mayday Resistance.' She plays an essential role in Offred's experience as a handmaid, and her bravery proves to be both disarming and contagious.
- Max Minghella as Nick
Nick lives above the Commander's garage and works as his personal chauffeur. A highly ambiguous character, Offred is never sure of where his allegiances lie and this becomes evermore confusing once Serena embarks on a strange arrangement between Nick, Offred and herself.
- Samira Wiley as Moira
One of Offred's closest friends since their college days, Moira is a lesbian and so after being forced to become a handmaiden shortly after Offred, has her own set of struggles with being a handmaiden.
- O.T. Fagbenle as Luke
Offred's husband before the Gilead Republic was established, as a result of having his divorce to his first wife nullified, Offred is considered an adulteress and her daughter with Luke is considered a bastard. Since becoming a handmaid though, Offred know's nothing about Luke or his whereabouts.
