Way ahead of its time when it was released back in 1982, dystopian cyberpunk classic Blade Runner took a while to find its audience. Now, 35 years later, it seems we are finally ready for it's long awaited sequel — Blade Runner 2049 — to delve back into the seething neon underbelly of a dystopian Los Angeles, populated by humans and replicants alike.
With #HarrisonFord reprising his iconic character of ex-blade runner (and possible replicant) Rick Deckard, and being joined by an all-star cast including #RyanGosling, MacKenzie Davis, #JaredLeto and Ana de Armas, director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) and producer/original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott are all set to give us the Blade Runner sequel we've been longing for.
So, to make sure you're constantly up to date with all the Blade Runner 2049 news, cast, characters and air dates here's everything you need to know about it in one surly, neon-lit place.
'Blade Runner 2049' Trailer:
The official Blade Runner 2049 trailer reveals that the movie is sticking very closely to the cyber-punk neo-noir aesthetic of its Blade Runner predecessor. With both director Denis Villeneuve and producer and original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott collaborating closely to ensure the essence of the original shaped and informed the sequel, hopes remain high — in the aftermath of watching the Blade Runner 2049 trailer — that they've managed to do precisely that.
'Blade Runner 2049' Air Date:
The Blade Runner 2049 air date will be October 6, 2017, which is much earlier than its initial January 12, 2018, air date. Getting a universal release in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D, fans news and old will get to enter the neon Blade Runner universe in a way they were never able to previously. With rumors of a Blade Runner sequel circulating since 1999, Blade Runner 2049 has been a long time coming — roll on October 6!
'Blade Runner 2049' Plot:
The Blade Runner 2049 plot revolves around LAPD Officer K (played by Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner, who unearths a terrible plot which could end life as we know it. On his journey to try and rectify this dire state of affairs he discovers Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who hasn't been seen for 30 years.
However, one Blade Runner 2049 plot detail we're all hoping gets answered once and for all concerns whether Deckard is himself a replicant. While the fact that he has clearly aged in the past 30 years may indicate he is a human, some argue that he could be an advanced replicant that mirrors the process of aging, or that he is an entirely new replicant altogether.
'Blade Runner 2049' Cast & Characters:
- Harrison Ford As Rick Deckard
Heading up the list of Blade Runner 2049 cast & characters is Harrison Ford who is reprising his role as Rick Deckard (or potentially a different replicant version of Deckard), the ex-blade runner who disappeared 30 years previously.
- Ryan Gosling As Officer K
The main protagonist of Blade Runner 2049, Officer K, is a new blade runner who unearths a terrible secret that threatens to endanger all of humanity. He sets out on a quest to stabilize this threat and on his way, runs into Deckard.
- Ana de Armas As Joi
Cuban actress Ana de Armas is set to star in Blade Runner 2049 as Joi, a character who we currently know very little about. From the promo material we can see she is riding in a car alongside Officer K and so we can presume she is perhaps also a blade runner, or at least helping Officer K out on his mission to save humanity.
- Mackenzie Davis, Character TBC
Canadian actress Mackenzie Davis is rapidly skyrocketing to stardom having made a name for herself after featuring in Breathe In, That Awkward Moment, The F Word, Halt and Catch Fire and a well received episode of Black Mirror. Her role in Blade Runner 2049 is yet to be revealed.
- Jared Leto, Character TBC
Established actor Jared Leto has starred in a huge swathe of successful and critically acclaimed movies from Fight Club and American Psycho to Requiem for a Dream and Panic Room. More recently playing The Joker in the critically panned but box office triumph, Suicide Squad, Jared's role in Blade Runner 2049 so far remains a mystery.
- Robin Wright, Character TBC
Making a name for herself after starring in The Princess Bride, Forest Gump and Message in a Bottle, in more recent times Robin has certified herself as one of the finest actors of our generation for her portrayal of Claire Underwood in House of Cards, as well as a stunning lead role in The Congress. Robin's character in Blade Runner 2049 for now however, remains under wraps.
Where To Watch 'Blade Runner 2049' Online:
For those of you asking where to watch Blade Runner 2049 online the answer is, at least for now, nowhere. Due to the movie not being released until October 6, 2017, it looks likely that we will not be able to watch Blade Runner 2049 online until at least 2018, when and if, it gets an online distribution from a video on demand platform such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon.
It is possible however to watch Blade Runner, the original 1982 movie, on Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, Playstation, Fandango and Microsoft for an incremental online rental fee.
