Now that Beauty and the Beast has been released, it's time to get good and excited for Disney's next live action adaptation — the eagerly anticipated Mulan. Following Fa Mulan as she takes her father's place in the Chinese army, Mulan is set to be a war epic, reinventing the animated classic to stick closer to the original ballad. The news for this film has been controversial at best, so here's all you need to know about the 2018 live action movie.
Filming hasn't yet commenced on the live action Mulan, but to tide you over, here's the trailer for the 1998 animated version.
Mulan Release Date
Mulan will be released November 2nd, 2018.
Although many fans are hoping the live action adaptation will stick to the animated movie's plot, so far reports suggest that the 2018 version will go in a different direction. Many fans were critical when it was reported that an early version of the script featured a white male lead, but Disney later revealed that this spec script had been discarded. Unfortunately, the male lead will not be Li Shang.
Instead, a new character called Chen Honghui has been added — described as having a bitter rivalry with new recruit Ping, Honghui changes his tune when it is revealed that Ping is female, falling in love with Mulan.
According to director Niki Caro, the live action movie will not be a musical, although she later went back on her comments.
Mulan Cast & Characters
So far, only two characters have been confirmed: The protagonist Mulan and the male lead Chen Hongui. We can expect other characters like Mulan's family, and the Emperor, to appear.
Where To Watch Mulan Online
As it has not yet been released, you can't watch the live action Mulan online — unless you want to check out the 2009 Chinese movie, which is available on Netflix. Otherwise, you can watch the animated original on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, and YouTube Movies.
