The Deuce's plot is set around Times Square in New York in the '70s which becomes the backdrop to the legalization and subsequent boom of the porn industry, a rapid increase in HIV, violence and cocaine use.
Inspired by the real life career of twin brothers, Frankie and Vincent Martino (both played by Franco) who became fronts for the mob and deeply involved within the lucrative sex industry, we watch as their lives entwine, for better or worse, with a host of complex characters just trying to get by in the underbelly of New York.
This includes the likes of Eileen 'Candy' Merrell (Gyllenhaal) who plays a prostitute, dreaming of escaping her life which is spent traipsing up and down the streets of The Deuce and Sandra Washington (Natalie Paul), a news reporter investigating the sex industry running rife in Times Square.
