It's that time of the year again, when the best and brightest of the TV world learn whether they'll be able to walk down the red carpet and get smashed on free champagne come September. Yes, the nominations for this year's Emmy Awards were announced this morning.

We really are in the golden age of television at the moment and this is clearly reflected in the nominations for Outstanding Drama Series. There are some real heavy hitters in there, with Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Downton Abbey (we love a British accent) all in the mix. It's going to be really tough to pick a winner here. My prediction? Mad Men by a nose.

The competition is equally fierce for Outstanding Comedy Series, with some older shows like The Big Bang Theory, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Modern Family going up against newcomers Girls and Veep.

Speaking of newcomers, scored a nomination for her role in New Girl, and it's good to see Louie C.K. get a nod for his excellent show, Louie.

One category that could be a little more straightforward is Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, with Modern Family snaring four of the six nominations.

Overall Mad Men and American Horror Story lead the way with 17 nominations each, with Downton Abbey and Hatfields & McCoys in second place with 16.

Here is a list of the nominees for the big categories. The rest can be found here.

What do you guys think? Is Mad Men better than Game of Thrones? What was the best comedy show of the past 12 months? What show will walk away with the most gongs? Feel free to speculate wildly below.

The Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 23rd.
