If you’ve seen the trailer for The Fate of the Furious then you're probably thinking the same thing that occurred to the rest of the internet: WTF Dominic Toretto?

Let's take a look at three insane theories that could explain why our favorite Furioso has turned to the dark side.

Starting at number three, Dominic Toretto betrayed his family because...

3. That's Not The Real Dom, It's A Clone

In a time of artificial intelligence and killer androids, what are the chances that our boy Dom has been kidnapped and the guy now behind the wheel is his evil duplicate? Extremely unlikely, but stay with me.

The franchise went from street racing in Miami to international bank robbers in Brazil to anti-terrorist unit in Abu Dhabi. Now the team is facing Cold War submarines in Antarctica.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the franchise enters sci-fi territory next. An action scene involving a space shuttle maybe? (Yes, please!)

So, a robot-Dom? Anything is possible.

2. Cipher Is Able To Bring People Back From The Dead

Charlize Theron’s character, Cipher, is the new villain of the franchise and the one who seems to be pulling the strings of Dom’s betrayal. There has to be a pretty good reason for Dom's doing the things he's doing.

What if Cipher, with some type of Lazarus Pit-technology, has offered Dom the chance to resurrect Han (Sung Kang), Gisele (Gal Gadot), Vince (Matt Schulze) or all of them?

The franchise has two more movies in store after and while that leaves ample room to introduce new characters, many fans (myself included) would definitely love to see some old faces return.

1. Dominic Toretto Owes Cipher A Family Debt

We’ve seen this plot device before: the protagonist owes the villain a debt, so if they don’t comply with the villain, then the villain will take something from the protagonist as collateral.

In the case of Dom, it seems like Cipher needs him to carry out her dirty work because he owes it to her. If he doesn’t, then his family will suffer the consequences.

It’s pretty straightforward and kind of boring, but what if Cipher is not just a plain old criminal mastermind? What if she is also family?

The theory suggests that not only does Dom owe Cipher an incredible debt, she could be his sister. (Talk about pulling a .) Especially since we saw them kiss at the end of the trailer.

It’s more plausible that Cipher could be an ex-girlfriend or ex-wife of Dom. Even crazier, some fans have theorized she could be his mother.

While these theories sound incredibly insane, is looking to be the best film of the franchise and Dom’s betrayal is just the tip of the iceberg.

What did you think of these theories? Let me know in the comments!
