Thanos, the Mad Titan, commander of the Infinity Gauntlet and supreme threat to the Avengers and the rest of the universe will finally make his grand introduction in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The stone-jawed Josh Brolin has been cast to play the mega-villain and a sneak-peek photo was released by the directors, the Russo brothers, to spark the excitement for the concluding chapter of the epic Avengers saga.

From what we can see, the directors are working closely with the actor and one cameraman aimed on Brolin's face. From the looks of it they are working out important facial impressions and body language for the Mad Titan. The script-in-hand also implies that the team are working on warming up Brolin's rich, dark voice with fresh dialogue. Filming for Infinity War won't begin until November so it's good to see the Russo brothers get a head start and really take time to work on the character.

Throughout the last four years, we've been following the threat of Thanos in the MCU. It seems like each film has been pulling us closer to a gargantuan showdown of good and evil that will be Infinity War and it's kicking off soon.

So in preparation for the big man's arrival, let's take a look back at Thanos' past appearances in the last MCU films to learn more about the character and his ominous motives.

1. The Avengers (2012)

Audiences we're first introduced to the Mad Titan in the post-credits scene of The Avengers back in 2012. Here we see the evil overlord receiving news from a minion who realizes that he underestimated the Avengers and their powers. The film ends with a reveal of Thanos' enormous face as he smiles wryly to the audience who can only guess what he was planning and scheming.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy featured Thanos heavily and revealed a lot about his unrelenting pursuit of the Infinity Stones he needs to collect to activate the devastating power of the Infinity Gauntlet. In Guardians, the main villain, Ronan, is acting on the behest of Thanos only to betray him in the end.

Thanos is depicted seated on his astral throne with a chilling red nebula behind him. His brutal treatment of his daughters, Gamora and Nebula, reveals an ice-cold nihilism, this villain cares only about absolute power and nothing else. When Nebula tells Ronan to back down from her father, that 'this is one fight you won't win', we most certainly believe her.

3. The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

The Infinity gauntlet is revealed in all its resplendent glory (only without the necessary stones) in The Avengers: Age of Ultron post-credit scene. We see Thanos slip his enormous fist into the cosmic glove as he addresses the audience directly grunting "Fine. I'll do it myself'. This short clip has set expectations high for the final chapter in the Avengers saga as Thanos looks nearly unbeatable with his intimidating weaponry.

How can the Avengers beat such a dominant force? Does Thanos have a weakness?
