Jessica Chastain stole our hearts playing unforgettable characters in films like Interstellar and The Martian. She’s also snagged Academy Award nominations for her outstanding performances in The Help and Zero Dark Thirty.
Now it appears she may do both with her role in director Niki Caro’s upcoming film The Zookeeper’s Wife, which lands in theaters March 31, 2017.
A new trailer was released into the wild on Thursday, giving us our first substantial look at the sure-to-be-emotional film. Grab the tissues (just in case) and take a look for yourself below.
Based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Diane Ackerman, the film tells the real-life story of Antonina Żabińska (Chastain) and her husband Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh), who ran the Warsaw Zoo in 1939. When Nazis invaded their country of Poland, the two began covertly helping the resistance to fight back and save the lives of those who were being targeted in what became the Warsaw Ghetto.
Antonina Żabińska risked her own life and the life of her children to fight back on her own terms. Her efforts made her a hero to hundreds of people during the second World War.
The trailer lets us know this film isn’t going to pull any punches. It’s going to hit us right in the feels with moments like the one here where an emotional Chastain gives a crying young girl a rabbit and says:
Maybe that’s why I love animals so much. You look in their eyes and you know exactly what’s in their hearts.
Cuddly animals and an emotional true story?!? Ugh, you’re killing us Jessica!
