Get your hankies ready for Max, a movie seemingly computer-programmed to maximize heart-string plugging.

The family adventure centers on a military dog returning home from service in Afghanistan. The canine veteran is deeply traumatized by his handler’s death – as is the latter’s family who takes the dog in. In the course of the movie the 14-year-old son of the family and the dog bond and together unravel the secret behind the handler’s death.

Now, I would be very suspicious of the incredibly tacky-sounding movie, were it not for writer-director being responsible for Remember the Titans.

Perhaps my favorite guilty pleasure, the Denzel Washington-starrer is so charmingly manipulative that I can’t help but marvel what Yoakin might do with a story about a friendship between a traumatized military dog and a fourteen-year old boy.

Tragically, as versatile as he is, doesn’t seem a possibility for either part!

Max will start production March 1, 2014.
