Only a month more of excruciating waiting and anticipating to go! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is about to hit the big screens, and director , ever aware of his (and Tolkien's) huge fanbase, has decided to treat fans to an entertaining build-up for the release with his own video blog showcasing some of the details of the trilogy's production.

Today, we bring you the twelfth of such video clips, in which we are regaled with a glimpse at the daily workings of an elaborate fantasy epic set. Highlights include:

  • Brief snippets of interviews with cast (i.e. , , etc.) and crew, such as John Levinson (Post-production Supervisor), Eric Saindon (Visual Effects Supervisor), and of course, Peter Jackson himself.

  • A look at the so-called splinter-unit (a variation on the traditional 2nd directing unit), which focuses heavily on stunts. The unit's usual director, (who also portrays Gollum in the Tolkien film universe), was busy last year filming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, so he was replaced by Jackson's long-time collaborator and storyboarder, .

  • A few pre-CGI scenes and blooper reel sequences, notably one featuring Gandalf the Grey () and Radagast the Brown ().

  • The all-important task of planespotting (you'll know what I mean once you watch the vid).

  • Discussion on Peter Jackson's arachnophobia (and how it ties in with the highly anticipated 'Great Spiders of Mirkwood scene.')

All in all, a very entertaining 8+ minutes. I recommend you check it out below:

Did you enjoy it? There's plenty more where that came from, and a bit more to come before the sequel hits theaters.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug premieres on December 13th, 2013.
