Today is the 15th anniversary of the release of A Walk To Remember and in honor of the film that started the Nicolas Sparks rage, director Adam Shankman and stars Mandy Moore and Shane West did an impromptu Twitter Q&A with fans. I know, it's hard to believe that Jamie Sullivan sang her way into Landon Carter's heart over a decade ago with "Only Hope."
While West was an experienced actor, the film was Mandy Moore's first official lead acting gig and brought forth a successful career for the actress where she now stars in NBC's huge surprise hit This Is Us. So is s a cast reunion on the way? Mandy Moore says YES!
In the Twitter Q&A instigated by director Adam Shankman, a fan asked Mandy Moore if they would consider a cast reunion, to which her reply sent the internet into a blaze.
OMG! That's right, Mandy Moore confirmed that the cast is actively "working" on a reunion to celebrate A Walk To Remember. Though we have nothing but that confirmation, it is music to the ears of the film's cult following. Let's cross our fingers this reunion happens soon.
The low-budget film ($11 million) premiered in 2002 and made over $49 million at the box office, blowing its budget out of the water and catapulting Moore and West to insta-fame. Its massive success surprised both the filmmakers and critics.
Based off of the Nicolas Sparks novel, the film followed troubled high school teen Landon as he's forced to participate in the school play to improve his character. There he meets the play's lead actress, Jamie, who is the conservative teenage daughter of the town's local pastor.
Throughout the film the pair find that their polar opposite personalities bring them closer. Just when things begin to heat up between them and after Jamie lulls Landon into her arms during the play with "Only Hope," Jamie reveals she is dying of leukemia and treatments have stopped working. Together Landon and Jamie live out the rest of her short life completing her bucket list.
A lot of the film's success came in the form of the film's soundtrack lead by alternative Christian rock band Switchfoot and Mandy Moore herself. The soundtrack climbed to the top of the Billboard charts instantly.
Both Mandy Moore and Shane West credited the film's success to their instant chemistry.
Mandy Moore also revealed to EW that the actor's chemistry wasn't all make believe, and that a part of her felt Jamie Sullivan's attraction to Landon in real life.
Shane was so cool. Everything about him – the way he dressed, the little cigarettes that he smoked, and the music he listened to. He was the character to me and there was definitely a part of me that absolutely fell in love with him. I don’t know if I could discern the difference between him and the character at that point in time because, again, it was my first experience doing anything like this and I was a 16-year-old, impressionable girl.
As far as her most difficult role to perform in the film as a budding actress, it was the intensely emotional scene where Jamie finally tells Landon the truth.
Oh the feels! I may or may not be crying right now— don't judge me. A Walk To Remember Inspired future Nicolas Sparks film adaptations including Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams' smash hit The Notebook and Miley Cyrus' The Last Song.
It's important to note that with all the reboots coming out it is impossible for the film to be rebooted as it had a very permanent ending, but a cast reunion is on the way and I can't wait to hear where the cast and crew believes Landon would be now. A Walk To Remember will always be our Only Hope and it's so lovely to see the cast as impacted by the film as we were.
