4 and 3 and 2 and 1...the countdown for the return of Broad City is almost over. Despite an excruciating long break, our favorite kweens are back and the series is looking crazier than ever. The last we saw of Abbi and Ilana, the two were flying back to New York City after a failed trip to Israel after they were denied access in the country—there may have been a misinterpreted bomb threat and weed mishap. The fourth season will continue documenting the latest chapters into the personal journeys of Abbi and Ilana as they spread their wings as young Jewish women living in a big city.
In typical Broad City fashion, the girls look like they get mixed up into a number of wild situations. Here is a look at what else viewers could look forward to this season:
A Change Of Seasons
The first three seasons of Broad City previously aired in winter months but the show has notably taken place in the summer. We are seeing a switch up for the ladies this season as the duo tackles winter in New York City. #AbbiJacobson and #IlanaGlazer recently stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss the upcoming season. Glazer explained the reasoning for the change of setting:
"Our show always feels like a summer show, we're sweaty and we're playing on the summer vibe, and we wanted to have this winter story because New York in the winter is such a different city than in the summer."
The hiatus between seasons has been longer than usual and Jacobson gave some insight into why as she shared that they wrote the season, took a break, and then did some rewrites.
Trying New Things
The wacky and absurd situations that that Abbi and Ilana get themselves into is what makes this #comedy unlike any other. The hilarious adventures usually have viewers laughing at the characters' expense but just as often leave us feeling a stronger connection to the pair. As funny as they are, there are plenty of us who have been through similar real-life situations. Trying to tackle the real world in your mid-20s is pretty difficult but it is also a time to try new things and find yourself, something that Abbi and Ilana are still doing.
This season will take the girls through a new handful of adventures including new jobs, possible new relationships, a visit from Abbi's mom, exploring witchcraft, and taking a trip to Florida. Oh, and they also swap out their beloved marijuana escapades to try out mushrooms; let's hope there's an appearance by Bingo Bronson.
We Finally Get An Origin Story
This fourth season will also include the pair of besties celebrating their friendiversary and viewers will finally get a look into how they two met.
The unique friendship and chemistry between Abbi and Ilana is truly what makes this #TV show work so well. They both may have their own struggles and issues but it just makes them extremely relatable. While watching, you will probably find yourself asking where you can find friends like them. They have an intense amount of loyalty and a rare understanding of one another, which probably explains their off-screen relationship as well. Jacobson and Glazer created the series based on their friendship and still are very active in writing and producing alongside Amy Poehler.
A New Group Of Guest Stars
The series has featured a wide array of guest stars thus far. The star-studded list includes Vanessa Williams, Seth Rogen, Kelly Ripa, Patricia Clarkson, Tony Danza, Tracee Ellis Ross, Whoopi Goldberg, just to name a few. The most notable guest star came last season with an appearance by presidential candidate (at the time) and the girls' hero, Hillary Clinton. It is safe to say Donald Trump will not be invited on the series any time soon and Jacobsen and Glazer are outspoken about being anti-Trump. The feminists will even be bleeping out the President's name this season.
To follow the trend of previous seasons, there is a slate of incredible guest stars lined up for the series' fourth season. The list includes RuPaul, Steve Buscemi, Mike Birbiglia, Jane Curtin, Lea DeLaria, Denis O’Hare, Wanda Sykes, and Shania Twain. Fans of the series will know that when Abbi lies, she tells people she is busy being a personal trainer to Shania Twain—will it actually come true this season?
Figuring Out Where Relationships Stand
Plenty of questions from last season remain unanswered which will undoubtedly come into focus at some point this upcoming season. Abbi needs to come to terms with how much Trey meant to her and whether or not their relationship is worth fighting for. Ilana is also going through her own issues after she had her heart surprisingly broken after Lincoln broke up with her for a monogamous relationship. Will Bevers still torment Abbi or, more importantly, will we ever meet Abbi's actual roommate, Melanie (who is dating Bevers)? Either way, we have a ton to look forward to this season.
Broad City Season 4 premieres September 13th on Comedy Central.
