It was recently revealed that Paramount has tapped Gavin O'Connor to direct a "gritty" reboot of The Green Hornet. Don't get me wrong β€” the original was a much more pleasant surprise than I was expecting, but a more serious reboot could give birth to a new comic franchise.

The series revolves around Britt Reid. By day, a well-known socialite and head of The Daily Sentinel (a news organization that has ranges from print to television to radio); by night, he fights crime under the alias "The Green Hornet" with the help of his sidekick Kato (originally made famous by Bruce Lee).

5. Chris Pine

Chris Pine has shown over the years that while he might lean heavily on his charm, he is a more than capable action star. After all, he's got movies like Star Trek, Smokin' Aces, and Jack Reacher: Shadow Recruit under his belt. The only problem is that he might be just a little too clean to play gritty. Flashing that pearly white smile and smug attitude might be perfect for Britt Reid, but he would have to dig deep to be the Green Hornet.

4. Zachary Quinto

Speaking of Star Trek, the next actor on this list is pretty familiar with Chris Pine. However, it's not his performance as Spock that gets him a nod on this list, it's back when he was the psycho killer Syler on NBC's Heroes. Cold, calculating and emotionless, Quinto could play a much harsher version of the Green Hornet. There's still a level of humanity to him that would make him a great hero.

3. Zachary Levi

Levi is a fan favorite among geeks and nerds around the world, and you're definitely going to need their support in order to make The Green Hornet a success. While he might be best known for playing lovable goofball Chuck, he took a much darker turn when he appeared in the Heroes miniseries that aired recently as a man hunting down people with powers. I think the combination of his puppy dog eyes and being able to go deep for characters would really add a lot to the role.

2. Armie Hammer

Sure, Armie Hammer has had some flops, but I don't think you can blame him for it. Though he has a habit of picking bad projects, this could be a good one for Hammer. He could bring a lot to Green Hornet. After all, it was rumored once upon a time that he would be playing Batman in a defunct Justice League project, and with his role in Man from U.N.C.L.E. last year, I think he definitely has the good looks and the action prowess to pull it off.

1. John Krasinski

Best known for his role as Jim in The Office, Krasinski recently blew people's minds as a Special Operations soldier in the film 13 Hours. He got in great shape for it and showed that he's more than just a prankster. I think the Green Hornet could be just the role for him to make a solid jump into the film industry, especially since he has shown so much dedication. Krasinski seems like the kind of guy who could play both Brett Reid and Green Hornet.

Honorable Mention: Chris Pratt

Let's face it though, Kato is the real star when it comes to the . So, if they get this casting right, the movie is set. Here are my top 5 picks.

5. Tony Jaa

Tony Jaa seems like a no-brainer when it comes to martial arts films. The only downside is that it's hard to tell whether he would be able to bring the emotion needed for Kato as a whole. There's no doubt that he could pull off gritty, hard-hitting action sequences, but he's not exactly an actor known for portraying true emotional depth.

4. Joe Taslim

Taslim is an up and coming actor is known for his roles in Fast & Furious 6, The Raid: Redemption and Star Trek: Beyond. This is perfect because he doesn't have a lot of baggage attached to him as an actor. Toss in the fact that he's done gritty (The Raid) and is drop-dead gorgeous and he could really make Kato shine as a character.

3. Tiger Hu Chen

Tiger is probably best known for the Keanu Reeves movie Man of Tai Chi, where he played a character thrown into a brutal fighting tournament trying not to let the darkness consume him. His performance in that role makes him perfect for Kato. He's an experienced martial artist, a solid actor, and has shown that he can portray the struggle with a darkness within. He is one is one of my personal favorites on this list.

2. Iko Uwais

After both Raid movies came out, Iko Uwais proved himself to be pretty much the new undisputed king of martial arts. He's probably the most promising up and comer on this list, and Green Hornet would give him a chance to show off on the American screen in a big way (he did have a small role in Star Wars Episode 7). It would take a lot of effort on his part to get the performance down, but his abilities from an action standpoint could make the film.

1. Lee Byung-hun

Lee Byung-hun is no stranger to playing badass martial arts characters on film, and to be honest, the market is a little over-saturated when it comes to him. Despite the possible saturation, it’s his work in the movie I Saw the Devil that puts him at the top of the list. His performance in this movie alone makes me believe that he has everything it takes to play a gritty version of Kato. Trust me, this man is the very best option to play Kato in the new Green Hornet movie.

So there you have it β€” five actors I'm hoping to see as Kato or Britt Reid in the new Green Hornet reboot. Let me know in the comments below who you hope will land the leads in this new movie.
