This week brought fresh news on the #HanSolo anthology film front, with Donald Glover being announced as our new Lando Calrissian. He'll join Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo as they blast their way across the galaxy, smuggling space narcotics and attempting to earn the approval of the nerd world's toughest critics: Star Wars fans.
Han Solo has always had a reputation for his shady past, and this origins film is sure to make for one satisfying backstory. However, there's more to Han's past than the history of how he came to acquire the Millennium Falcon. His biography features an array of colorful characters and miscreants. With further details on the full cast currently under wraps, we can only speculate as to who will get to play them. Let's take a look at some of the possibilities:
5. Doug Jones As Greedo
If anyone knows how to rock a full face of prosthetics, it's Doug Jones. If he looks unfamiliar, that's because you're most likely used to seeing him in more creative attire. Jones has played just about every non-human creature on the big screen, from Pan in Pan's Labyrinth to Hellboy's Abe Sapien. He's the perfect candidate for bug-eyed bounty hunter Greedo, a prominent figure in Jabba the Hutt's underworld social circle.
4. Tessa Thompson As Sana Starros
Tessa Thompson is one of three actresses said to be shortlisted for the role of Han's wife Sana Starros. Sana and Han married as part of a scam, and Han was quick to scorn his new bride by hastily absconding with Sana's cut of the winnings. Suffice to say, she's not Han's biggest fan. Given her recent role as the sharp-tongued Sam in Dear White People, Thompson would surely shine as the feisty Mrs. Solo.
3. Nicholas Hoult As Lobot
Move over Chewie, there's a new sidekick in Cloud City. Before he lived up to his name by becoming a walking lobotomy, Lobo served as Lando's original smuggling accomplice and official BFF. What he lacked in personality he made up for with his cyborg brain implants, a curse-turned-gift from the Galactic Empire itself. Dapper Brit Nicholas Hoult did such a good job of playing a coy young Hank McKoy/Beast in X-Men: First Class that Marvel may just have to steal him away. Not to mention that he rocked the hell out of that bald head in Mad Max: Fury Road, and by god he can rock that look again.
2. James Rolleston As Boba Fett
"Daniel Logan who?" I hear you ask. No, really, who? He played Boba Fett in both Episode II and The Clone Wars series. Unfortunately, 29-year-old Logan may now be a little old to play a slightly younger Boba Fett. Fortunately, New Zealand is brimming with bright young actors, and James Rolleston happens to be one of them. He absolutely killed it as the star of The Dead Lands, a 2014 Maori revenge tale. His experience in this more mature action role surely makes him ready for the next step in his career.
1. Joonas Suotamo As Chewbacca
Hey, who's that tall Scandinavian next to Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew? Actually, that's the other guy who played Chewbacca in The Force Awakens. While he can still rock that Wookie war cry, 71-year-old Mayhew is a little less lithe than he used to be. OK, so this isn't exactly the most original pick for Chewbacca, but at 6'10" tall, who else could be a better physical fit to play Han's freakishly tall co-pilot?
The Han Solo anthology film will be released on May 25th, 2018, which is a relief considering how much FOMO Han had after seeing the trailer for Rogue One.
