After two years of teases and questions about Adam Warlock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2 set up the beloved character in a post-credits scene. We see one of the film's antagonists, Ayesha, staring at #AdamWarlock's cocoon with the intention to use him as a weapon against the Guardians.
Here's the thing though: We may know Warlock is out there, but we had no idea of when he would be finally showing off his impressive power arsenal in the #MCU. Fortunately, that might have changed, thanks to director James Gunn's Instagram account.
#JamesGunn took to Instagram Stories to share a picture of himself doing some much-appreciated Adam Warlock research. Surprisingly, he was quick to take it down, but here's a screenshot of it:
The image was captioned with:
"A little night reading."
Gunn was reading Warlock Masterworks Vol. 1. That particular story deals with Adam traveling across the cosmos to get to Counter-Earth, the planet created and inhabited by the High Evolutionary. Once there, the High Evolutionary pressures Warlock into becoming the savior of their planet from the evil Man-Beast.
Does that mean the trade paperback he's reading holds clues to the character's role in the movie? Not exactly. Gunn enjoys taking creative liberties, so trying to figure out which elements he'll take from comic book stories can be a bit of a nightmare. Furthermore, movie writers and directors teasing their research material for characters they'll use in the future is a pretty common thing.
But James Gunn may have done something much bigger than that with this image...
Why It Matters: Gunn Is Writing 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3' Right Now
Back in April, Gunn revealed that Adam Warlock was originally part of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 screenplay, but got cut in order to make the story more focused:
"I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him [...] But it was one character too many [...] So I decided to save him for later.”
Marvel Studios chief #KevinFeige then clarified that "later" didn't mean Infinity War, as fans may have assumed:
“He’s not in 'Infinity War'. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that [...] If he appears anywhere in the future, it’ll be in 'Guardians.'”
Here's the thing: James Gunn is currently working on the script for #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol3. With that, him looking up Warlock research material (so pivotal to the character, might I add) right around the film's writing stages doesn't seem like a coincidence. Such timing, in fact, is our best hint at Warlock appearing in the Guardians' third adventure.
Granted, it was pretty easy to guess it from Kevin Feige's comments, but this makes the speculation much more likely. If we think about it, Warlock's introduction in Vol. 3 works from a story standpoint. First of all, he was teased as the Guardians' new pain in the neck in the aforementioned post-credits scene. Secondly, the film will be set four years after Vol. 2. That seems like a reasonable amount of time for Warlock to fully evolve into an adult (going by comic book logic, of course).
So, it seems Adam Warlock will indeed be popping up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. While the movie is still far away, the likelihood of finally seeing him on screen just made us a whole lot more excited to watch it than we already were.
Do you think Adam Warlock's first appearance will be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Let me know in the comments!
