In less than a month, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return to ABC for its fifth and possibly final season, which has been shrouded in mystery. Season 4 gave us only a vague ending, but fortunately, the first trailer for Season 5 has arrived, providing us with a better look at the adventures in store for Agent Coulson's team when they awake aboard an alien spaceship. Check it out below.

The trailer smartly doesn't spoil the major plot points of Season 5, but hints at the obstacles standing in the way of Coulson's team as they escape from this unknown vessel. Here are the most important takeaways from the trailer:

A New Star-Lord Joins The Game

To be clear, the character in the images above isn't Peter Quill, but his helmet and jacket do appear quite similar to Star-Lord's. It's yet to be seen if this character is like Peter Quill, personality-wise, considering his ominous entrance. Plus, he can be seen attaching some anti-gravity weapon on one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents, disabling them, so he's probably not an ally to Coulson or his team.

May And Simmons Take A Spaceship For A Ride

Apparently, Agent May and Simmons will find themselves aboard an alien spaceship that neither of them know how to operate. Luckily, May has enough confidence in her piloting ability that she takes it out for a test drive.

What's interesting is that the rest of the team isn't on the ship. It may just be a matter of camera angles not placing them in the shot, but if May and Simmons are alone, this could mean they'll take the ship back to Earth while the rest of the team waits for rescue.

The Kree Are Back ... With An Alien Monster

While the Kree have been absent from the past two seasons of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., they're coming back. No clues as to why have been revealed, but seeing them disable the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents with plasma rifles gives me the impression that the Kree are in command of the ship. If the Kree are in charge, does this mean they have their sights set on Earth?

What Else Is In Store For S.H.I.E.L.D. When Season 5 Returns?

Aside from what's been hinted at in the Season 5 trailer, we still don't know why the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were taken into space. Nor do we know who is responsible for taking them. The Season 4 finale only showed a silhouette of the individuals who picked up Coulson's team, so there's no way to tell who's really in charge here.

Luckily, we won't have to wait much longer to find out what's in store for S.H.I.E.L.D. with Season 5's premiere less than a month away.

Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for Season 5 on December 1, 2017.
