ABC's Fall lineup has certainly confused Marvel fans, and we'd previously believed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 wouldn't launch until January 2018. We knew that filming already commenced on Marvel's flagship TV show, and now, ABC President Channing Dungey has revealed that the series will actually air later this year. What's more, she's just made an Avengers: Infinity War tie-in even more likely...
We Have A Release Date
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Dungey revealed that Season 5 will launch "right after" Marvel's #Inhumans. Although the first two episodes of Inhumans are showing at IMAX cinemas from September 1st, the full show won't begin airing on ABC until September 29th. That means we can expect Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 to kick off on November 24th this year.
It's news that's sure to delight any #Marvel fan, not least because that means we can expect an incredible November. Thor: Ragnarok will hit theaters, The Punisher is expected to debut on Netflix, and we recently learned that Hulu's Runaways will launch on November 21st. We've never had a month like it in Marvel history; counting the conclusion of the eight-episode Inhumans series, that means November will bring us a new Marvel movie and no less than four TV shows!
But Dungey also dropped some more tantalizing hints about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5. According to Entertainment Weekly, she noted that the fifth season would air "relatively uninterrupted." It's a notably different approach to Season 4's fan-and-critic-acclaimed "pods," and it's sure to make every fan wonder why Marvel has abandoned a successful experiment.
The answer is most likely to be a simple one: Infinity War.
Are We Heading For A Major Infinity War Tie-In?
We know that we're in for a 22-episode season, and — if there were no interruptions — we'd be expecting the Season 5 finale to air on April 20th. That would be just a fortnight before the US release of #InfinityWar. Of course, in the real world, the odds of Season 5 airing with no interruptions at all are slim-to-none. You're going to be talking at least a two-week break over Christmas, which would mean the finale would air in the very same week Infinity War was released in the US. Even if there are more interruptions, there's no way timing so precise as this is a coincidence.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has always had a habit of tying in with the latest Marvel blockbuster, and it would be fitting for Season 5 to ultimately lead into Infinity War. The movie will mark the 10-year anniversary of the #MCU, and most fans are sadly expecting Season 5 to be the end of the road for S.H.I.E.L.D.. But what a way to end; by becoming part of the build-up for the biggest Marvel movie event of all time!
It's important to note that the stars are already aligned for a crossover or tie-in. Season 4 ended with Coulson and his team abducted by an unknown military group, and we then had a final scene showing Coulson in space. Most fans are convinced he's now an agent of S.W.O.R.D., an organization dedicated to protecting the world from alien threats. More recently, Chloe Bennet posted an Instagram video that unwittingly teased an actor dressed as what appears to be a Kree. Although she was quick to take the video down, it was enough for fans to spot it and call out another sign that Season 5 is going cosmic.
So we've got a cosmic direction, and a finale that airs just as the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe dives head-first into the most dramatic cosmic adventure we've ever seen in a Marvel movie. You don't have to be an Inhuman precog to be predicting a major tie-in of some kind.
Marvel fans are sure to be thrilled at this news. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most notable tie-in arcs have always been popular. The most notable example is surely all the way back in Season 1, when a faltering first season was given a shot in the arm by Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While it doesn't look likely that Coulson and his team will actually make their way into Infinity War itself, at least the show looks set to be part of the 10-year-anniversary celebrations. We're sure to learn more at this year's New York Comic Con in October!
