It feels like an eternity since we've had a good sci-fi television series to look forward to, but that could soon change with Defiance, the latest offering from Syfy. The show has been created by Rockne S. O’Bannon, who previously gave us the excellent Farscape, so there's no doubting it has sci-fi pedigree.

A new trailer for the show has arrived, so check it out and see what you think:

Want a synopsis to go along with the trailer? Here you go:

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden — and tumultuous — arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully.

This sounds really promising. Great sci-fi is not about spectacular special effects (although that does help), but about well-written characters and gripping plot, which is the reason why myself, and many others, loved both Firefly and Battlestar Galactica. It's about substance over style and it looks like Defiance might have got the balance right.

If you want to know more, head over to the official Defiance homepage, which has a really cool interactive element that allows you to get character bios and take a look around the town.

Defiance premieres in April on Syfy.
