Warning: This article contains spoilers from American Horror Story: Roanoke.
American Horror Story created a terrifying new world when its latest season Roanoke premiered to viewers back in September. Initially focusing on the fictional documentary titled My Roanoke Nightmare, viewers watched Matt and Shelby Miller move into the Roanoke house as their nightmare began to unfold. After Roanoke Nightmare came to a terrifying conclusion producer Sidney Aaron James put a sequel series into production called Return to Roanoke: Three Days In Hell. This reality style #TV show would feature the re-enactors from Roanoke Nightmare and their real life counterparts move back into the house during the Blood Moon cycle.
During the chaos, we were informed that only one participant would make it out alive after everyone else dies under "mysterious circumstances". Over the past few episodes of American Horror Story, almost everyone involved in the production of Return to Roanoke was murdered but the latest episode was the biggest bloodbath yet as the Blood Moon reached its full potential and the colony came once more to make victims of the house guests. "Chapter 9" has left us both heartbroken and devastated, but we also found out who survived Return to Roanoke. Let's take a look at all of the devastating deaths and what the identity of the survivor will mean for next week's finale.
When Wes Bentley's Dylan showed up in last week's episode, fans were confused as to why he was dressed up in a Piggy Man outfit. "Chapter 9" revealed that Dylan was hired by Sidney to add a little drama to the show and had no idea what he was getting himself into. Audrey and Lee explained that everything about Roanoke Nightmare was real and he agreed to help the pair get out of the house and off the land before nightfall — the third night of the Blood Moon is always the worst.
When on the Polk farm, Dylan found himself attacked by the last remaining Polk. We thought he'd died there and then but it became apparent that he was still alive. Later, when the colony showed up at the Roanoke farmhouse, several of the colonists were dragging Dylan with them. Just like we'd seen with Cricket in Roanoke Nightmare, the Butcher sliced open Dylan and disemboweled him on the spot. It was eerily filmed on Dylan's camera, giving us a disgusting up close and personal shot of the disemboweling.
Although Bentley was credited as a series regular, his appearances in Roanoke were rather limited meaning that his death will have little effect on the show. Sure, it was emotionally horrifying to witness — especially from such a camera angle but he wasn't around long enough to have a drastic impact. I guess the primary effect of his death is that Dylan's ghost will forever be tied to the Roanoke land. His brief return allowed Audrey and Lee to find Monet, but unfortunately he couldn't help them escape.
Todd Allan Connors
"Chapter 9" brought in three new characters — fans of the original Roanoke Nightmare who thought they would check out the set of the show during the Blood Moon cycle. One of those characters was Todd Allan Connors who many of you may have recognized as Glee's Jake Puckerman — love interest to Melissa Benoist's Marley. Todd was apparently the one who knew the directions to the house but during the dark hours he stumbled onto Lee Harris, standing alone in the woods.
Viewers had the opportunity to see Lee getting help from Scathach earlier in the episode, which must have allowed the witch to possess her. In a rather shocking moment, Lee slit Todd's throat and proceeded to kill him in front of his friends.
Todd's death revealed that Lee had been affected by Scathach's assistance. Whether or not she was possessed or if she was merely acting under the influence of the witch was not revealed — we now have reason to believe that Lee is forever connected to Scathach after we saw the same ritual performed during the My Roanoke Nightmare re-enactment, connecting the Butcher to Scathach forever.
Later in the episode we were informed that the footage of Sophie and Milo's deaths was recovered from Todd's iCloud account — I'm not quite sure how that works but clearly Todd's desire to record everything — he wanted to become a hit on social media — helped reveal the truth about what really happened that night. He probably did become a social media legend, just not in the way he imagined.
Jacob Artist's appearance on the show also marks the third Glee actor to appear on American Horror Story since Ryan Murphy's hugely successful musical dramedy came to an end last year — Darren Criss appeared in Hotel and Cheyenne Jackson has appeared on both Hotel and Roanoke.

After escaping the Polk family last week, we had no clue what happened to Monet. The latest installment saw Lee, Audrey and Dylan going back to the Polk farm in the hope of finding her. Audrey found Monet just as daylight was coming to an end and the pair hightailed it back to the Roanoke house when the colony began approaching. After her run-in with Scathach, a somewhat possessed Lee made her way back to the house and stumbled upon Monet and Audrey. Lee began talking like the Butcher, telling the pair that they don't belong on this scared land.
Monet, who delivered some great lines, got defensive but Lee pushed her, sending her crashing into the bannisters and falling onto a large spike spike. She was still breathing when Audrey made her escape from Lee but when the police arrived the following morning Monet was dead.
Monet's death marks a turning point for Roanoke as it was made clear to the viewer that there was no coming back for Lee — shed admitted on camera to murdering her ex-husband and now she'd killed two more people. Even if Lee did escape, what kind of a life would she have now?
Sophie & Milo
After their friend Todd was murdered by Lee, Sophie and Milo stumbled upon the Return to Roanoke production truck where the figured out exactly what was going on. Much to their horror, they saw on one of the cameras that Lee was approaching the house — they knew she would kill Audrey. The pair of Roanoke fanatics ran to the house to try and save Audrey but they saw the Roanoke colony approaching from nearby.
Lee ambushed both Sophie and Milo and the pair were dragged out onto the open farmland in front of the house. Screaming and shouting, the two characters pleaded with Lee to let them go free but sue to her possession, Lee wasn't listening. Much like we'd seen in Roanoke Nightmare, a bloody ritual began and Lee recited Agnes's famous Butcher monologue about how the real Butcher is "the tree and the lightning that strikes it." Both Milo and Sophie were penetrated with large wooden spikes and left on display before being burnt at the steak while they were still breathing. Again, the unique camera angles made this scene much more disturbing and the Return to Roanoke viewers were actually warned about the "graphic, violent and deeply disturbing" images they were about to witness.
We knew that AHS alum Taissa Farmiga would be appearing at some point and some eagle-eyed fans spotted Farmiga on the promo for this episode, but her role as Sophie was completely unexpected as we all thought she would be playing the real Scathach. Sophie's death was horrifying not only because it was Farmiga playing her, but because the character was so young, so human and wanted to do do a lot more with her life. The two characters played a huge part in bringing the true horror of Roanoke to light and for that they will forever be remembered as legends.
The most upsetting death of Return to Roanoke was without a doubt Audrey Tindall who had transformed from a snooty actress into a badass survivor. Throughout the three days of #horror, Audrey had managed to defy the odds and stay alive until the very end, avoiding death on miners occasions. When Lee killed Monet, Audrey stabbed Lee but it was no use as she was clearly operating on some form of supernatural power.
Audrey made a run to the tunnels but Lee found her, hacking her shoulder with the Butcher's cleaver before kicking her into the tunnels and shutting the door. The following morning, Audrey climbed her way out of the tunnels where she was rescued by the police. It seemed like such a victory story. Lee was also alive, and had seemingly recovered from her possession but made a disgruntled and disturbed Audrey release her anger. Reaching for the police officer's fire arm ,she yelled at Lee calling her a murderer but she could shoot her tormentor, every officer on the land retaliated by shooting Audrey, killing her instantly.
Audrey's death came as a shock to me as I had come to believe that she would be the survivor of Return to Roanoke. Moreover, she had been on such a strong character journey over the past few episodes so her survival would've been a worthy conclusion to the horrifying Roanoke story. One good thing will definitely come from her death — it will likely solidify her as the great actress that she always dreamed of being and her unwillingness to give up mixed with her untimely, unwarranted death will likely play a huge part in the remainder of Roanoke. Audrey was not the survivor and her death means one huge thing for American Horror Story, which is...
Lee Is The Survivor Of Return to Roanoke
Lee Harris did it — she did the impossible and survived the hell that was Return to Roanoke. Several weeks ago, I thought Lee would be the survivor, however her confession to killing Mason made me certain the there was no point to her survival now that we know of her guilt. But that's American Horror Story for you— keeps you guessing until the very end. The interesting story begins now — Lee joined Return to Roanoke to prove her innocence but in reality it hass only made her look more guilty.
The police officers found Lee metres from where she had aided the Butcher in burning an mutilating Sophie and Milo several hours prior. When the police officers discovered Lee, she let out a scream and it became clear that she was back in control of her body —however, we don't know if she's aware of what she did and I guess the finale will bring the footage to light and Lee's fate will be in question.
Check out the promo for next week's episode:
American Horror Story: Roanoke races towards its terrifying conclusion and with only one episode left all of our confusion will likely be set straight. With Lee revealed as the survivor the world will likely turn on her for what went down during Return to Raonoke. However, with the visual footage of the events of those horrifying three days, Lee has some support and an interview with Asylum's Lana Winters will likely set all of those haters straight, right? Or perhaps something supernatural will go down killing everyone in the process — this is American Horror Story we're talking about, be prepared for anything.
American Horror Story: Roanoke concludes next Wednesday on FX. What do you think will happen to Lee? Tell me in the comment section below.
