Maleficent hit the big screen three years ago. The story gave the classic Sleeping Beauty tale an unexpected twist by making Maleficent as a misunderstood heroine who over the years forged a motherly bond with Aurora. While it only earned a 50% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was a box office success, raking in $758 million globally on a reported budget of $263 million.

With those numbers, a sequel was inevitable, and was announced, and a few months later, it was confirmed that Angelina Jolie would be reprising her role. Last month, The Tracking Board reported that Jez Butterworth (Spectre, Edge of Tomorrow) had been hired by to rewrite the film's script. But aside from that, news about it been quite scarce. Fortunately, that dry spell has come to an end. Now, we have confirmation that it's happening from Maleficent herself.

Get Ready For Maleficent's Return

Speaking to Deadline to promote her next directorial venture, , Angeline Jolie was asked whether she was interested in directing once again. The actress joked that since her divorce, she's the sole provider of her family, which means that she's ready to return to acting:

"I am now the breadwinner for the family so it's time."

Ok, but what does mean for her Disney career? It's been widely rumored that Jolie will join Universal's Dark Universe as the in Bill Condon's upcoming 2019 reboot. Fortunately for Disney lovers out there however, the actress revealed that Maleficent 2 is her priority right now:

"We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel."

Ok, I'm pushing down my excitement to not scream like a maniac right now. While a few fans may have disagreed with Disney making Maleficent a hero, the dynamic put an intriguing twist on an old story. We've seen the princess/witch fairytale story play out numerous times in the past. So seeing who we'd usually consider a villain as a misunderstood individual with an emotional connection to our protagonist was a fresh approach.

While there's no way to know whether the sequel will be a critical hit, the script has had three years of development, so there's a chance that this film will resonate with audiences more than its predecessor.

When Can We Expect 'Maleficent 2' To Begin Production?

Seeing all the excitement about returning and a promising script being in development, you may be wondering when Maleficent and Aurora will begin on their new adventure. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie revealed she would go back to acting in the coming months.

"When I feel it's time for me to go back to work, I'll be able to go back to work. I've been needed at home. I hope [to work again] in the months to come."

I'm simply speculating here, but taking those comments into account and seeing how Maleficent 2 is her next project, I'm hopeful the sequel goes in front of the cameras in early 2018. That would be a good move. hit theaters three years ago, so it would be on Disney's best interest to get the movie out as soon as possible while the film is still relatively fresh in people's minds.

What do you think about Angeline Jolie's heavy involvement in Maleficent 2? Do you think the film will be better than its predecessor? Let me know in the comments!
